1st post, long time lurker, love the site and the real life section in particular. I grew up in Boston and try and follow the happenings ups there more closely. What a mess, lol..

Anyway, after googling around over the weekend, how are guys like Vincent "Vinny Ocean" Palermo still alive..? They sell out their pals, take all their illegal gains and opens a strip club and buys a big fancy house in Houston with no fall-out at all. Out in the public eye, without a worry in the world...

Thoughts......

If a big name rat gets killed, the FBI will be all over the Mafia. It's not worth it to kill them.

I don't know when the last "rat" was killed by the mafia, but it seems that once a person has "flipped" the damage has been done. Ted brings up a good point - the higher the profile of these turncoats (Casso, Gravano, Hill, Palermo, Massino...) the closer scrutiny they receive from the public at large, not to mention the federal law enforcement. So by killing them and perhaps getting caught, is it worth cutting your nose off to spite your face?

I know, I read that whole story somewhere. Funny I live here now....Vinny Ocean is running around in public though, owning strip clubs and gettting caught for running pro's out of there, same old story. But he's right out in the open and could easily be gotten too...

One of the local newspapers did a story about sammy after he was arrested. He was at the same coffee shop every morning and was at his restaurant "uncle sals" almost every night.

Here, you guys will really like this piece:

I am originally from Staten Island,NY and have had my share of MOB dates..lol... But, I moved to Houston a few years ago... Imagine to my surprise, when I found a AD on Craigs list for a Rest/sports bar Manager. I called spoke to a man by the name of James. Go in for my interview, and LORD * BEHOLD.. Who is doing the interview? James Capella.... Vinnie Ocean Palermo... I was like really? We sat down, and he started talking, telling me how GOD has blessed him, and how GOD helps those that help them selves. This is why is so fortunate in life.. blah blah blah.. At this point, my BLOOD PRESSURE was at 200/200..lol... and I cold no longer compose myself. I said to him.. I was raised in Bayonne, NJ, and my adulthood, I lived in Staten Island. He looked at me.. I said to him " I KNOW WHO YOU ARE" and stood up and walked out. REALLY?????? You got all these things, a huge house on Memorial Drive, 5 business in Houston, cause GOD helped you... You are a MURDERER, AND WHAT MAKES YOU WORSE, THEN THE OTHERS IS THAT YOU ARE A RAT!!!!!! You have no integrity.... TRUE STORY .. He owns Bubba's on Washington

In terms of rats being killed, not many know this and its hard to find evidence, but Jimmy "The Panda" LaValley was supposedly killed a few years ago. Joseph Fosco also claimed this on his blog, but again, no evidence. Would be interested to know if anyone knows more. The Outfit has killed rats living in new locations like Louis Bombacino previously.

They also got VERY close to Nick Calabrese by infiltrating the U.S. Marshals.

They also (accidentally) got close to Frank Cullotta, he got on a plane while in-between trails and lo and behold there's an Outfit-connected guy on the plane. He got off the plane and called up his Marshal friends scared shitless. They bought him a ticket for another plane and sent a Marshal to look after him.

This life of ours, this is a wonderful life. If you can get through life like this, hey, thats great. But it's very, very unpredictable. There are so many ways you can screw it up.-Paul Castellano (he would know)
