In english class we are reading The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. I got to thinking and came to the conclusion Scarface is a tragedy. In Romeo and Juliet pretty much every one dies, Romeo, Juliet, Mercutio, Tybalt etc all die. In Scarface Manny, Tony, Chi Chi, Tony's sister( forgo the name), Tony and all his friends die. Just like in R&J

Jus because a lot of people died in the movie does not make it a tragedy. Millions died in Independence Day, does that make it a tragedy?! wink

I see what you are saying. It's hard to explain. I guess at the time it made sense to me.

Well actually Kasa, he's right. Both Romeo and Tony Montana died for lust. In Romeo's case, he died because he wanted to get with Juliet. In Tony's case, he died for the money, power, woman yeah you know the quote. In both cases, they're kinda the same. Tony's best friend and partner in crime is Manny. Romeo's best friend is Tybalt? Tony wants Gina, and Romeo wants Juliet. So I can see SZ's point.

I do not consider Scarface a tragedy, because Tony, and all the characters who died (Gina included), got what was coming to them. Drugs is a nasty business, and they knew the risks. Romeo and Juliet died for a different purpose.

thanx raulito. i still think it is similar to R&J but im not saying it is boo hoo chick flick sad. O and not trying to sound like a smarty pants but Tybalt was Reomeo's enemy. Mercutio was his best friend. just sayin cause i am reading it currently.

It really could be looked at as a tragedy. Tony worked very hard, whether it was legal work or not, to get what he wanted, just like how Romeo and Juliet worked really hard to get what they wanted, eachother, but after all of their work, ended up dying/failing.

I do not agree. The people who die there, are not important people for the movie. In Scarface, all the people who are seen very much, are dead at the end(not Elvira).

You can pretty much classify almost every movie a tragedy. Is GF a tragedy? Prehaps. Sure. Scarface is a tragedy, why not.

I don't like the sound of Scarface as being a tragedy. It is in essence a classic rise and fall gangster story.

I don't think the whole movie is a tragedy, only the last hour to the ending, things end up bad and so it ends up like a tragedy.

Why did gina deserve to die? I don't think she did, she didn't get what was coming to her.

She should have ducked grin . Well, now that were on the subject of Shakesphere, I was recently reading the synposis for MacBeth. It reminded me of Scarface grin . Tony is MacBeth, and Manny is Banqo. In MacBeth, Banquo and MacBeth are genreals in an army, and they have returned from a victorious battle. Something with three withces, (that has nothing to do with it.) and then MacBeth becomes Thane of Cawdor by the king, Duncan (Lopez). MacBeth has Duncan killed(Tony kills Lopez, and this is because of Tony getting fucked, and partly because he wants Elvira all for himself. MacBeth killed Duncan because of his wife. ) and then MacBeth becomes King. Then MacBeth gets powerful, blah blah blah, and he murders Banquo.(Tony kills Manny.) Fast forward, Duncan's son, Malcolm(let's say, Sosa) joins forces with this other guy MacDuff(let's call him Skull) They build an army to fight MacBeth, fast forward again, and MacBeth is killed by MacDuff. Theres alot of simililarity between them.
