Palermo: Operation Monterrey puts 34 Italo-Mexican narcos behind bars05/22/2012
A Drug trafficking organization that operated between Mexico and Italy and supplied cocaine to the domestic market, was dismantled by police, who worked closely with the American DEA, the U.S. anti-drug department.
In total, 34 people were arrested by the Anti-Drug Squad section of Palermo, in collaboration with the Central Drug Services Department and State Police.
The actions were issued by the investigating magistrate at the request of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate.
The charges range from importing and trafficking in the country, to possession with the intention to distribute drugs, particularly cocaine and hashish.
The investigation, codenamed Operation “Monterrey” after the Mexican city, was launched about three years ago. Investigators have collected ample evidence against Italian citizens resident in Mexico and in contact with drug cartels.
The operation, which has also led to the seizure of large amounts of drugs, has led to the disarticulation of the criminal organization that had another supply channel via courier in Eastern Europe.
