Veteran NYPD detective admits robbing cigarette smugglers

A crooked, second-generation cop pleaded guilty this morning to brazenly ripping off cigarette smugglers while wearing his NYPD "raid" jacket and armed with his service weapon.

Shame-faced Kyron Collins, 39, then capped off his court appearance by running away from a photographer and leaving his lawyer in the dust.

Collins, a 16-year police veteran who most recently was a detective in the 52nd Precinct, was busted last year in a 10-month string of robberies of bootleg cigarette dealers in Manhattan and The Bronx.

Court papers say he and two accomplices were caught on surveillance video loading up a black SUV after a July 26 heist in which Collins -- after flashing a fake search warrant -- ransacked a Fordham Heights stash house and swiped a cache of unstamped Newport cigarettes and $7,000 in cash.

NYPD detective Kyron Collins pleaded guilty this morning to ripping off cigarette smugglers while wearing his NYPD "raid" jacket and armed with his service weapon.
In Manhattan federal court this morning, Collins pleaded guilty to one count of robbery in violation of the "Hobbs Act," which covers crimes involving interstate commerce.

Under the terms of his plea bargain, he agreed to serve up to 71 months in the slammer and fork over $1,700 as his share of the proceeds from the caper.

Defense lawyer Eric Siegle, who previously described Collins as a "good detective" with "an impeccable career," declined comment.

Hey, at least he wasn't using or dealing drugs. Shit, he may have been robbing gangsters, real bad people, not just small time crooks.

You're right, could be worse. Still, the oath and badge and shit.

I hear ya Mickey, though I get the feeling that he knew those smugglers were also movers of other stuff or connected to criminal gangs. Shit, I say good riddance to the cop knockin' them off. I mean it's not like this guy was dealing drugs or robbing everyday folk. Hell I wouldn't mind it if LE robbed more drug dealers, just for the hell of it.

If cops decide to be criminals, then they should lose all protection of their badge. Once they decide to be shady they should become fair game. You are either a cop or a criminal, but you cannot be both.

This jungle bunny was crooked and deserves the same 20 year sentence a non cop would get.
