By the way usually the girls in grade school were never hit, only the boys. I dont know about high school, as the boys and girls were segregated. frown

Sister MP sounds ALOT like our Sister Ann at St. Nicholas RC School in Palisades Park, NJ.

Same height, approx same age (at least to us 1st graders) and pretty much the same demeanor. Once, she put me over her knee, and whacked my little panty-clad butt with a ruler in front of the whole class. Of course...I don't recall what I did to deserve such 'special' treatment wink

I remember one of Sister Ann's famous sayings, which she'd utter with a sinister grin:

"You're so dumb, it's pathetic."

We kids used to smile along with her, figuring she was kidding around with us...which I'm sure she was.

But who knows...

Perhaps I should've phrased it, 'panty clad bottom'...more becoming a 6yr old.

And believe me it's a much better visual then than now!!!

I had 12 years of Catholic school... first nuns then brothers, and it was tough. They would indeed whack anyone who got out of line. Jeez in grade school we couldnt even use ball point pens.

I am forever grateful however because it gave me very strong academic training which prepared me for college and grad and postgratuate education.

Their "No Child Left Behind" program was easy. If you fell behind they would beat the hell out of you, so you kept up.

Anyone who gets indoctrinated into the Church at an early age is going to carry that for life no matter what. Thats why at the end of the day I do not think Michael's confession was that peculiar. He had been raised Catholic as a boy, and some of it stayed with him. When the Cardinal asked him "What have you got to lose" Michael figured "Yeah, sure (in Frankie's words)" and confessed his sins.

Well I have the Catholic story to end them all! This happened three years ago. My very strict and old school mom made me go to Catholic High School afetr she left my dad, and her and I moved to our new town. My mom became friends with one of the Sisters there. My grades were sucking bad so the good sister would come to our apartment after school, just down the start from the school, while my mom was at work and tutor me. During one of our sessions I unintentionally ohwell called her a bitch. What I didn't know was my mom gave the sister the permission to punish me just like she did. (What you must know about my mom was 1. She is a bigger lady 2.She believed that as long as I lived in her house, I was her child and she could turn me over her knee and take down my pants.)

So you can only guess what happened next, my bottom was bright red when the sister was done, and yes I the "tough" teenager had tears in my eyes. And then of course my mom came home and turned me over her knee..... frown

Sounds like a situation where you deserved it, for lack of respect.

VITO CORLEONE

I understand. You found paradise in America, had a good trade, made a good living. The

police protected you; and there were courts of law. And you didn't need a friend of me. But

uh, now you come to me and you say -- "Don Corleone give me justice." -- But you don't ask

with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather. Instead,

you come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you uh ask me to do

murder, for money.

that's not being Catholic, that's being sadistic. Sadistic people suck. Sadistic people hidden behind nuns' or priests' clothes suck even more. You should have reported the whole thing to the dean or to the Bishop. I'm so sorry you had to pass through this horrible experience. I thought these things happened in past times, but that was only three years ago!!! What a shame!!! Christ taught us love, this is intolerable violence, totally wrong educational system and -- most of all -- against Christ! frown

While I am not at all in favor of any type of child abuse, sometimes a little smack on the butt does wonders in teaching a child the difference between right and wrong and respect.

As a general rule I'd agree, but in my opinion it's nobody else's business but parents'. Plus, in this particular case it was a teenager involved, not a child.

Except in this particular case, the parent had given permission to the nun to punish the teenager as she would.

So in this particular case, it WAS the parents' business.

In my Brooklyn neighborhood, we were in awe of the kids who attended Catholic schools because of all the grim stories we heard. Of course, the Catholic school kids accommodated us by embellishing all their experiences. One girl told us about how the nuns used to rip scarves off girls to inspect their necks for hickies eek . Another told of sadistic sisters who not only wielded rulers and back-of-hand smacks, but made wayward girls drink ink out of the Waterman's bottles. rolleyes The guys told similar tales, except they involved punching and kicking by the brothers.

Years later, in my workplaces, I'd have this colloquy with male co-workers:
"Did you go to parochial school?" "Yeah!." "What was the teaching order?" "The Irish Christian Brothers." "Did they whack you around?" "Yeah, they beat the piss outta me!!." "Would you send your kids to parochial school?" "Sure--it'll teach 'em discipline." lol

You are assuming that all discipline is violence and abusive. Actually the hitting of others people really didnt happen that often back when. It was usually done with parents telling each other what their littel precious was doing.

What the sister did was not abuse, she turned me over her knee and spanked me, I did not consider this abuse, I mean it was with her hand and yes it did hurt and yes I did cry a little but it wasn't abuse.

My mom was and still is a great parent. She raised me by herself, and she spanked me up until I moved out. Heck, she probably still thinks I deserve it from time to time....

No Harm Done. I always knew I was in trouble when I went over her knee and my pants came down and I alwasy learned my lesson. frown

I remember my little old Italian grandmother occassionally smacking my grown uncles on the hand or arm...when they would lovingly tease or talk back at her.

She would run after them yelling...

"You SONOMABITCH...I'm-a still-a you MAMA!!!"

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government.

I would consider abuse any form of humiliation, physical or psychological. As a former teacher, I don't think spanking is a useful or effective educational means and would have never dreamt to spank any of my students (who were about your age at the time of the fact, I guess -- 12-13 years old). I'm glad you didn't perceive it as an abuse, anyway.

I didn't mean your mom isn't a good parent even if I sounded so. I would never in fact dare judge her or any other parent and apologize if I let me be misunderstood! I meant parents shouldn't delegate every parental power to educators because this may go too far. And they should control the educators' behaviours and systems and as long as they approve them, then it's ok. My parents would have never let an educator turn me over her knee, have my pants down and spank me. But then again, that's just me.

couldn't that mean you are still a little upset about the episode?

I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell the truth. I tell what ought to be truth (Blanche/A streetcar named desire)
