Carol Gino alerted me to this new Showtime series, premiering Sunday, April 3rd at 9PM ET/PT. This is "the family" written about in Puzo & Gino's THE FAMILY (2001).... THE BORGIAShttp://www.sho.com/site/borgias/home.shoOver a decade in the making, The Showtime Original Series The Borgias is the sordid saga of one of the most remarkable and legendary families in history. Set in 15th century Italy at the height of the Renaissance, The Borgias chronicles the corrupt rise of patriarch Rodrigo Borgia (Academy Award® winner Jeremy Irons) to the papacy, where he proceeds to commit every sin in the book to amass and retain power, influence and enormous wealth for himself and his family. The unbounded audacity of this original crime family went on to inspire Machiavelli's The Prince and Mario Puzo's The Godfather. Don't miss a minute of the lavish, sexy, scandalous drama from the creative mind of Academy Award® winner Neil Jordan. The Borgias begins with a special two-hour premiere on SHOWTIME Sunday, April 3rd at 9:00 PM ET/PT. Future original episodes will air Sundays at 10:00 PM ET/PT.

This is "the family" written about in Puzo & Gino's THE FAMILY (2001).... They also inspired Don Altobello's poisoned cannoli . Should be wonderful. Jeremy Irons is a brilliant actor. He's done two episodes of "Law and Order: SVU" this year. He may have given the two best guest appearances in the history of the show. And that's saying something.

Anyone watch it? I missed the whole Godfather comparison segment (I think a piece didn't record, I'm trying again to see). I thought it was pretty interesting -- Jeremy Irons was pretty good. Not quite as dramatic as, say, SPARTACUS, but certainly worth catching each week.

After a slow start, "Borgias" really hit a high stride. The last episode was just terrific. The series also introduced a truly memorable character: the French King Charles, who was simultaneously ruthless, cynical, charming, self-deprecating and a sucker for piety.
Although the series appeared to be lavishly produced, I saw a lot of painted backgrounds. We were lucky to have "Borgias" and "Game of Thrones" this season. But, as good as both are, they still can't top Showtime's "The Tudors."

Any reason why they are not broadcasting the 8th episode this week? Many new episodes don't air here in the US on major holiday weekends (Memorial Day weekend runs Sat-Mon). I suppose because viewership would be lower as people travel. Someday they'll realize that people have DVRs and/or On-Demand!

I was looking forward to knowing the result of the epic fail of last episode. Now I have to wait another week, the horror...
