"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungleā€”as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Drugs let to the Mafia's decline I don't understand why they continue to get involved in drugs.

Same reason they got involved in the first place - $$$$$$$.

That said, the Mafia's involement in the drug trade is limited today. Having been marginalized over the past 25 years or so, they are no longer the dominant players. In fact, looking at the remaining viable families, only the New York families really have significant drug operations. But even there they are more at the mid to lower levels. Other families, including New England, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Detroit, have relatively little involvement in narcotics.

By mid to lower level involvement are you implying that some guys are actually on the street selling to buyers at will like some of the street gangs (bloods, cryps)?

Tommy Shots: They want me running the family, don't they know I have a young wife?
Sal Vitale: (laughs) Tommy, jump in, the water's fine.

Far Out. That BC Bud brings in some dollars.
You seldom see pot bust's uncovering that sort of money in Australia.
Thats not to say that there's no big busts; that happens all the time.
The cops are always uncovering and seizing huge crops and massive amounts alleged to be worth millions "on the street", but those amounts of ready cash are never found.
Australia pays some of the highest prices in the world for heroin, but some of the cheapest for pot.

Nothing for nothing, but for decades (and some believe to this day) a huge proportion of the marijuana trade in Australia was controlled by a handful of Italian-Australian families, Calabrians, to be exact.

By "mid level" I mean at various wholesale levels. "Lower level," when it comes to the mob, would be selling to individual dealers themselves, not actually selling to customers on the street. For instance the mob is big into distributing ecstasy to individual dealers, who then distribute it in mob-controlled clubs. The only street-level drug operation involving the mob I've ever heard of was a Lucchese crack distribution ring in Brooklyn back in 1996. James Galione, a Lucchese soldier, oversaw the ring and his own dealers, as well as charged a "street tax" to unaffiliated dealers in the area.

Yeah I figured, I am familiar with James Galione. I believe he had an associate called Mikey Flatop who later wound up testifying against a bunch of mob guys? Or was that another person...

Im wondering if just because it was on Bonanno "turf" automatically mean's that it is a Bonanno racket.
Am i naive to think that such a thing could be going on under their noses without their knowledge?
Maybe.
