First of all... great site. some very knowledgable and smart people on here.

My first question is what happend to Tessio when he was found out, he was frog marched off and into the car, but would he meet a merciful death? and who did it? havent read the novels so apologies if it clearly states in there.

thanks

Welcome.
It does not state in the novel exactly who helped Tessio transition to the Great Beyond.

From the movie I would guess that it would have been Willie Cicci and that it would have been quick and efficient.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

....then maybe the FBI snagged him on his way to the cement shoe factory, offered him witness protection and instead of having him sleep with the FISHes, he became a FISH....on a sitcom. wink grin

Welcome aboard.

...btw, what was the name of the guy who whacked Tessio in that Winer novel?

Hey, I couldn't resist taking a pot-shot at Winegardner. It's been way too long since I've done that.

He lives in the Tampa area, DT. When "Returns" first came out, he was doing the book tour in Florida. He was at the Barnes and Noble in Boca and the guy had the nerve to leave a million flyers promoting the writing class he teaches way over in Tampa. I mean, who the Hell is going to drive way across Alligator Alley to take a writing class from a hack like him? lol

Geraci, that's who killed Tessio! To "make his bones". So now Roth FB, you're asking who the heck is Geraci? You'll just have to read all those wonderful Winebagger novels. Oh, yeah start with Puzo and the real Godfather book.

If Michael wanted to send a public "message," he would have had Tessio killed in the car and had his body left where it could be found, like a shot across the bows of the other gangs (as was Paulie). But since he intended to whack all the other Dons, I'm guessing that Tessio was taken to some secluded place, shot in the back of the head, and buried somewhere that his body could never be found, so that Michael's "legitimacy" move to Nevada wouldn't be clouded by having the body of a close associate turn up murdered.

Of course, Olivant would say that Manolo the gardener did it and buried him in the rose garden. Nice crop that year.

What would the Corleones do with Tessio's family? Give them a living? Or let them enjoy what Tessio had saved?

In the fictional world of Puzo's Corleones, yes, I'm sure the family would be taken care of. If it were a real New York City mob crew, they'd probably end up on welfare.

Now TB, you know very well the pivotal role that Manolo played in the Trilogy the scenes of which, unfortunately, ended up on the cutting room floor.

The CIA may have been involved in the killing of Tessio, and other key events in the Trilogy.

The evidence:

In "Burn After Reading," two gym employees haplessly try to blackmail a fired CIA operative after getting a copy of his memoirs.

How does the info fall into their hands? It's suspiciously found in the women's bathroom by a janitor named... Manolo.

Not really answering the question, but I took Tessio dying off-camera as a measure of preserving a shred of his dignity. As though the viewer is to believe that, while he did turn and got what he deserved, his betrayal was a bit more justifiable when compared to Paulie, Carlo, et al, given his prior decades of loyal service and his overwhelming belief that there was no other method for him to survive.

I think the fact that Tessio acknowledged his betrayal ("Tell Mike it was business...") and accepted it (even after asking Tom if he could get him off the hook) was drama enough for that scene. It was as if FFC said, "the guy acknowledged he was guilty, let him die off screen." Carlo, on the other hand, lied and groveled--he deserved to have his death shown.

In the novel Tessio's death isn't described either.

I really love that movie. I recently stated in the "Random movie whoring" thread that the final scene with John Malkovich was the best scene of the decade for me - "You represent the idiocy of today" lol

and I agree that the last Tessio scene was drama enough. it's still one of the trademarks moments of the trilogy for me. it shows how those men handled their business really well and how the Corleones were both badass and respectful. Tessio recognizes his faith and doesn't even tries to react, unless Tom "gets him off the hook".

You know what bothers me even more than Winegardner's shitty writing and bullshit storyline? The fact that the PUZO family ok'ed and approved the shit that he wrote based on the great characters and fantastic story that Mario Puzo created. The Puzo family should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this fugazy self proclaimed author Winegardner to pollute Mario Puzo's Godfather novel and it's wonderful characters.

The money hungry Puzo family is more at fault than Winegardner himself!

Don Cardi cool
