"There had been indications of what the end is like. Remember when Gerry Torciano was killed? Silvio was not aware that the gun had been fired until after Gerry was on his way down to the floor. That's the way things happen: It's already going on by the time you even notice it."- David Chase in conversation about the LAST scene in the Sopranos
Monte, it's all part of Chase's genius...always making us think; "WTF?!?" right before a pivotal scene thus making it that much more impressive and dramatic. Examples...Right before Janice shoots Richie, she runs away and he sits there eating his pasta thinking she went upstairs to hide. After gingerly tossing a bride's magazine off his chair on to the floor, Janice reappears...then Blam! Nobody expected that. Chase disarmed us then hit us right between the eyes! Right, Richie?!? Any other examples, anyone?..

How about the scene where Doc Santoro (now boss as a result of the hit on Jerry Torciano) is having dinner with Phil Leotardo discussing Lupertazzi Family business. All seems to be going okay and Phil is pretty much at ease with his place in the family. Then in mid conversation, Doc, on an obvious power trip, reaches over and forks a sausage right from Phil's plate THEN asks Phil if he doesn't mind. Phil gives the okay but the look on Phil's face is telling us all what is going to happen next. The symbolism of that scene is priceless..."I'm Doc Santoro, I'm the boss-not you-and everything that is yours is mine and I'll eat from any plate I want." This seals Doc's fate. Phil and Butch set up Doc's assasination and Phil takes over the family. Another example of how little things that Chase shows add up to be great scenes. Thoughts, anyone?..

Mark, that scene is priceless. But it also points up something about Mafiosi: why don't they ever seem to figure out that their business creates enough enemies for them without their antagonzing anyone they don't have to?

Good point, Olivant. The answer is simple; arrogance and greed. Just look at the recent headlines in our country. I told my wife 10 years ago that the bankers and "financial experts" were the new Mafia Godfathers in The United States. Of course she laughed at me and blamed it on my Mafia obsession! But remember the classic line; "A lawyer with a briefcase can steal more money than a hundred men with guns." That is so true it is painful. Politicians who are supported by these reptiles create laws and policies designed to screw the regular guy upside down and sideways. These so called legitimate bankers and brokers have twice as many ways to steal us blind and hide behind loopholes, lies and laws. Mafiosi don't scare me half as much as bank presidents, lawyers and Wall Streeters. They all seem to share this "untouchable" persona. Bottom line, in my humbled, non college educated opinion, arrogance and greed. Anyone care to jump in?

I think it's because most successful mafia bosses or criminals in general are like sharks. They have to do what they do or they lose their reason for existing.
There's always someone behind them coming up who's meaner and hungrier so the guy on the top always wants more. More money, more power, more respect.
"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives." Winter is Coming Now this is the Law of the Jungleāas old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die. As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

Speaking of bankers and brokers, I wonder if and to what extent the underworld was involved in the recent financial debacles.
