Was watching part II today and the scene where Kay tells Michael about not wanting another Corleone son to enter the world

well it got me thinking a little

even though Vincent is not Michael's son ... he is actually the kind of person Kay is talking about when giving her reasons for terminating her pregnancy

any thoughts on this?

Kay was one p***ed-off woman.
Her having an abortion was a deliberate rejection of Michael and everything he represented to her.

I know Ultrasound has been around for a while but were people using it for sex determination in the fifties? Not sure.

Anyway it's a great scene because you see how angry and vindictive Michael and Kay can become when pushed to the limit. She tells him about the abortion and mentions this "Sicilian thing" specifically to hurt him as much as she can.

I think Vincent was exactly the sort of person that Kay had in mind.

"When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies but the pack survives."
Winter is Coming

Now this is the Law of the Jungle—as old and as true as the sky; And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk, the Law runneth forward and back; For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

I think Michael himself didn't want a son like Vincent. He would do anything for turning legitimate, following his father's wish:
"Senator Corleone...".Also states this in #3.
Kay never believed him, never realised his hard efforts to stabilize stuff.Michael's mistake, as Fredo's,was to marry an American woman.Would Apollonia ever kill his child?
Also one more comment:

While Michael was away for buisiness,Kay couldn't leave the house, right?I bet that even her doctor was made to go in Lake Taho to examine her.How did she arranged the abortion?Another hint perhaps for Tom?

He didn't want a son like Vincent--he wanted Anthony to become a lawyer and help make his enterprises "legitimate." But he needed Vincent and used him.
Kay did believe Michael was trying to become "legitimate," but as we saw when they were dancing at Anthony's party, she was getting mighty doubtful. And, after the Tahoe shooting, that was it for her--no more belief at all.

Although abortions were illegal in America at that time (except to save the mother's life), any woman with money could find and pay a doctor to abort her. And Kay had plenty of money. Not a problem even if it were performed at the Tahoe estate.

No, ultrasound and amniocentisis didn't come into wide use until the late Seventies. I doubt that Kay knew it was a boy--how could she after only three months, absent those techniques? I think she had the abortion to declare her independence from Michael, and made up the stuff about a boy to rub it in.

How times have changed. Back then, killing your unborn child doomed a woman to all types of consequences as Michael proved. Today, it's like dropping a bad habit.

I had my kids in the 90's and even then ultrasound wasn't all that reliable to determine the sex.

As for Kay, as TB said, a fairly safe abortion could be had for the right price. And I'm sure that, as controlling as Michael was, I'm sure he left Kay with plenty of cash.
