Wisegal (2008)

Premieres Saturday, March 15 at 9 pm et/pt on Lifetime

About the Movie
Time for all the "wiseguys" to step aside for the "wisegal" in a mob movie like no other. From Executive Producer Joe Pistone, the real-life "Donnie Brasco," comes a true story offering the female take on life in the Mafia. Patty Montanari (Alyssa Milano), widowed at a young age, takes a page from the neighborhood Mafioso and turns to selling contraband cigarettes to support her three sons. Patty then begins a romance with mobster Frank Russo (Jason "The Last Don" Gedrick), who recognizes her business savvy and gives her a nightclub to manage. Before long, she gets promoted even higher up in the ranks. She becomes a big-time money courier for "the family." And although she's living the high life, Patty soon becomes disenchanted with the mob — especially when she fears that her sons may end up "wiseguys" one day. But everyone knows getting out of the mob ain't easy — especially when you're working for the boss (James Caan) of one of New York's five biggest crime families. See how Patty tries to break free without losing her life.

I'll watch it for James Caan, but little else. I'll always have a soft spot for Alyssa Milano, but Jason Gedrick? Ugh, he's the King Of Made For TV Dreck. I can't stand him.

An absolutely horrible review.

According to this reviewer, it's more than a little offensive to New York Italians, especially Brooklynites.

I'll probably watch it. I was considering it when I saw that James Caan was going to be in it in the TV Guide preview, but I'm REALLY considering it now that I know Joe Pistone is the executive producer.

Anyone see it last night? I thought it was typical Made-for-TV mafia fare. The story wasn't bad. I loved Milano's accent - she did a good job I think. It was nice to see a powerful woman in the role (after all, it is a network tailored to women). I found nothing more "offensive" here than any other mob-related movie. I agree with Variety that it contained cliche after cliche, and even being based on a true story, it still seemed rehashed. But I liked it. The Hollywood Reporter liked it, too.

It airs again tonight at 8pm on Lifetime.

I just thought the accents were over the top. Not so much hers, but that Jason Gedrick, I just can't stand him. James Caan was, well, he was James Caan. Always good, even when the film is bad.

Being "offended" is in the eye of the beholder. I can't tell you to be offended, anymore than you can tell me not to be. I guess I just spent too much time at Sons Of Italy meetings as a kid.

I enjoyed watching it. I even liked the accents. If it ever comes to dvd I'll buy it. My son asked if that was Sonny from the GF and I told him yes it was.

It was eh...

Kind of cheesy and everything but I think it was a good idea.
