I am new here... and I don't know if this has been done, but I thought it would be fun to see how many times the deadly orange has been noticed. This includes the fruit and the color and the circumstances around it.

I'm pretty sure our Don has a section on his site with all of the orange sightings. I could be wrong though.

Don't worry about it. Interesting stuff about the oranges anyway.

This whole thing about the orange is weird for me. What's wrong with the orange (both the fruit or the color)? eek grin

The whole orange thing was not there in the Novel. After watching the Pentangeli-Tom scene(comparing Corleones with Roman Empire) before Pentangeli's suicide, I suspect that FFC might have tried to link some historical reference with this symbol. FFC was not he kind of guy who would have introduced stuff for no reason. Ofcourse I am just speculating (this is always fun grin ), but I wish I knew what such a symbol could mean smile

Obviously the appearance of the orange always sybolizes that death is on the horizon.

I think I read or saw somewhere that orange was chosen because it showed up well on the film...can anyone confirm this?

Yeah, that was the only reason.
There are plenty of dark scenes in GF, and the oranges "light up" un the dark. They give contrast, also between life (Tattaglia; making peace with Vito), and dead (oh no, there's an orange in front if him)

I can confirm this. There is a documentary floating around that mentions this as well as something in the Godfather Legacy. At least that's how it started out. Certainly by GF II , FFC had to know that oranges happened to show up at auspicious times (even when Michael almost has a second diabetic stroke, he is saved by a glass of orange juice) orange

While as dontommaso (who if I recall correctly left the list last week) said it's confirmed in a documentary...I say there has to be something more to it at least by the time GFII was made. In the scene where meeting Roth at the airport is discussed, Michael is seen BITING into an orange...I mean who the heck BITES and orange and what motivation would FFC have for having Michael munching on of all things an orange while plotting the assasination of his one remaining enemy. He could easily have been snacking on an apple or even a pear if they needed a lighter color.

No...there's more to the orange thing than just how nicely they show up on film. (Unless FFC had some friend who ran an orange plantation and they could get them by the barrel for pennies...)

You recall correctly Apple, but you know that I fly off the handle sometimes, saying stupid things.....so when you point out my inconsistencies you must not ask "how did this happen?" because that's the business we've chosen.

As for oranges, the Corleone family has a long history of putting orange rinds in their mouths. Look at Vito... it was one of the last things he did.

Hmmm, I recall someone else here doing the same thing several months ago, but eventually being persueded into coming back. wink And thankfully they agreed. grin

You both are a great asset to this thread, and it would be a shame to lose either one of you.

It's good to have you back in the Godfather Trilogy Don T.

True. Only because I recall SOMEONE'S PM arriving literally within MINUTES of the toodle-oo post practically BEGGING said member to not leave the list and profusely APOLOGIZING for anything they might've said that would cause member to leave in the first place.

It was an offer that couldn't be refused.

I'm assuming you know the story behind that ... FFC has tells it beautifully in one of the many Brando biographies.

And I remember getting a super fast apologetic reply in a PM informing me that the post that was made which caused one to say tootle loo was totally misconstrued and that it was all a misunderstanding. lol

Regardless, the band is back together and that's what counts! wink

So have either of you ever bit right into an orange?

When Michael bites directly into that orange in GFII it always makes me squirm. lol

Apple, are you talking about the FFC interview on "Inside The Actor's Studio" by any chance?

A superb story told by FFC about his first meet with Brando to convince him to do the Vito role.

No, that's not the one I'm talking about...it's another interview where FFC tells of how Brando himself came up with the orange peel teeth thing that made the little boy cry.

Great story.

Yes, it is in a documentary, and then they basically repeated the boy being scared of Brando when they filmed it.
