Explosion Outside Building Linked To 'Sopranos' Actor.
NEW YORK - A small explosive device was set off outside a building on West 29th Street early Tuesday morning, causing damage to a van but no injuries, authorities said. Tenants of the five-story building were evacuated as a precaution so authorities could make sure there wasn't another explosive device. They found nothing else. Authorities have ruled out terrorism.
Law enforcement sources said they are reviewing security videotape from the area and are reviewing it for possible clues.
"While there certainly is no evidence that this was terrorism, we are taking this and every act of violence extremely seriously, and we'll take every step to identify and apprehend whoever set this explosive device off," said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
The building houses a theater studio partly owned by the father-in-law of Michael Imperioli, a star of "The Sopranos," but sources said they don't know if that has anything to do with the incident. Imperioli played Christopher Moltisanti, Tony Soprano's nephew, on the popular HBO television show.
Sources said the pipe bomb was 2 inches wide and 4 inches long. It was set off by a fuse without a timer, sources said.
They described the device as a standard galvanized pipe bomb that was designed to frighten people but not cause massive damage. Authorities are trying to pinpoint exactly where the device was left.
No arrests have been made at this time.
Studio Dante is described on its Web site as "an unexpected jewel-box that was built to house progressive new plays." Imperioli created it with his wife, Victoria.
