After Vito was shot, Fredo is not shown again until Vito comes home from the hospital (unless I missed him). Was he totally mortified that he fell apart while his father lie bleeding on the street? I'm surprised anyone in the family wanted anything to do with him after that, which is maybe why they sent him Vegas.

Which begs the question, that since Fredo was known for not being too bright, why would they send him to Vegas to set things up for the families big move? As they found out, he very quickly "took sides against the family".
He sure wouldn't make it as a bodyguard! I agree with you, he wasn't suited to do much of anything, except "banging cocktail waitresses two at a time"! However, even after going to Vegas, it seems the "training" was wasted, as he was still relegated to menial errands, which did not go unnoticed by Hyman Roth.

The novel states that Fredo was under heavy sedation after the shooting and Sonny and Tom said to keep him out of everything.
It also states that he was sent to Vegas to recuperate and scope out the ground for a family casino there, not to set things up for that move. At the Don's meeting, Vito learns that his son has a knack for running a hotel.

It's strongly implied that Fredo had a nervous breakdown after Vito was shot. He was sent to Vegas to recuperate, under the protection of the Molinari Family on the West Coast. The idea that he was to "scope out" the Corleone Family's future in Nevada gaming probably was a sop to Fredo--a loincloth for his general uselessness. Notice how Michael goes out to meet face-to-face with Moe Green about buying him out of his hotel, rather than having Fredo do it.

Does anyone remember Mad Magazine's parody of GF, right after the movie came out? They named Fredo "Fraidy" & Sollozzo was "Sell-Outsa". I can't recall anyone else's names...it was pretty funny though.
