Thank you Turnbull for informing me of this excellent book. It is a MUST for all who post here. Not only does it answer many of the questions that get repeated on this board, it also raises other questions I have not seen (more positngs to come later). It is perhaps most remarkable that the Godfather was ever made. The opening chapters make it clear that Paramount Studios, and the Hollwyood industry in general were in a state of near collapse, and that a gamble was taken on FFC who was considered to good writer but not a commercially successful director,on Marlon Brando, considered too expensive and too difficult, and on Al Pacino whom the studio disliked. Imagine that they were looking at the likes of Ernest Borgnine to play Vito. Imagine what that would have been like. I never thought Borgnine (rest in peace) was a bad actor, he would just have been a bad Don. After reading this fascinating history there can be little question that the Godfather both saved and changed American Cinema.

It really is a great book. I also found many things in the book that I thought I would find more of on the boards. For example, the irony of the Mafia involvment in The Godfather. And then the story of when Puzo bumped into Frank Sinatra. It is a must for anyone who psts on these boards.

DT:
What did Luca do to the guys that Capone sent to Don Vito? Is this true or is it just made up for the GF story?
