I'm currently engaged in this topic on another forum, and I know there's a fair few Beatles fans here. It's been debated that both are songwriters of considerable talent and differing styles. Paul's written some classics - Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday, Back in the USSR... hell, even some of his solo stuff is excellent, particularly Band On The Run. But John (IMHO) brought heart and soul to a Beatles song.
If I were to choose who would be the best songwriter of the two, it would be really difficult because they're both responsible for classics. But which one of them turned me on with their songs? I'd have to say John.

Paul has a nice voice, but John's lyrics are better, and I think John really expended himself into the music... More so than Paul.
"Somebody told me when the bomb hits, everybody in a two mile radius will be instantly sublimated, but if you lay face down on the ground for some time, avoiding the residual ripples of heat, you might survive, permanently fucked up and twisted like you're always underwater refracted. But if you do go gas, there's nothing you can do if the air that was once you is mingled and mashed with the kicked up molecules of the enemy's former body. Big-kid-tested, motherf--ker approved."

John. As much as I love Paul, John's the man I agree. Besides, look at what both guys did after 1970. John wrote "Imagine". Paul created Wings. No contest.
