No, not the Bowie song. The series. A hit in the UK over both its seasons.
It's heading stateside soon, albeit under the auspices of David E. Kelley who has decided to 'remake' it for American audiences. This, to me, is a mindboggling situation. We Brits are a very understandable bunch and there's absolutely nothing wrong with the quality of television we produce (except for the crap reality shows). Why on earth do American producers insist on remaking our programmes?
Anyway, I digress. You guys should really check this show out, they're bound to be showing it on BBC America. If not,
Season 1 and
Season 2 are available now on DVD.
The basic plot is that Sam Tyler, a Detective Chief Inspector in Greater Mancheter Police Force, is hit by a car in 2006. He wakes up in 1973. He doesn't know if he's going mad or in a coma, but in '73 he's a copper assigned to a team, also in Manchester, run by a hard-nosed, mysoginistic, politically-incorrect DCI called Gene Hunt. Sam's modern policing techniques repeatedly clash with those of another age and the results are often hilarious, always very entertaining.
If some of you find it hard to understand 'Mancunian' (as we call it around my neck of the woods), subtitles are readily available. But please see the original before it's remade.
