i read somewhere the other day that there is not one scorcese film whithout someone calling an african american or hispanic person a nig#er...whether its just a quick referal or an actual moment in the dialogue apparently its in every one of his movies..now as a half puerto rican half italian i'd like to know if anyone has noticed this before ...thanks

No more than a Spike Lee film using the word guinea, etc....
They both try to be realistic and they're good friends.
Spike has said on many occasions, that Scorcese has been the single biggest influence on him as a filmmaker.
So, in short, if Spike loves him he CAN'T be a racist.

It's dialogue in a movie. Did he write it? In some cases yes and in some no. I saw, let it go, it's a movie. Now if he's giving an interview and starts shouting "WHITE POWER" then you have an argument. Other than that, you haven't got a leg to stand on because what about the writers for The Sopranos? Or how about Quentin Tarantino himself?

I haven't seen The Age of Innocence yet, but I'd be surprised if the word turns up there.

Personally, I do not believe that Martin Scorsese is a racist. It would take more that a few words in a script (by any filmmaker) to convince me of such a disturbing charge. I would require a lot more proof in other areas.

im not arguing for or against irishman!!!i was simply asking if people had noticed it thats all...im not trying to discredit him in anyway..im actually an avid fan of his work

White power is no more racist then black power. But that's gonna set off a completely different debate.

Scorsese isn't racist but some of his characters are. Travis Bickle is a racist to a certain degree because all of the black men he knows are criminals and all of the black women he knows are hookers aside the movie attendant.

They're called real characters. What do you expect a racist character to call a black guy? A poopy head?

and isnt your quote proof that atleast he has to stereotype blacks in his movies..i mean he dosent make movies about gangster african americans seeing wop hookers on the streets and creating a visual of italians being lower class than blacks or hispanics...

Yeah, in general whats portrayed in Taxi Driver is very realistic. There are a high amount of African Americans who are criminals like shown, and there are even white ones too just like they're depicted.

In general, Marty grew up in a predominately Italian neighborhood. I don't know how much of the African-American community he was exposed to as a child, but the environment that is presented in Goodfellas, Casino, etc. is the enirvonment he said he was accustomed to.

Whereas you take Quentin Tarantino and he had a heavy African-American influence growing up because of where he lived (hence Jackie Brown, etc)

I've never seen any evidence that Scorsese is a racist.

However, characters in many of his movies have racist opinions and thoughts, especially Travis Bickle in TAXI DRIVER.

Hell, Scorsese the "racist" changed the pimp character of Sport in Paul Schrader's DRIVER script from black to white.
