I'll have to go with Gena Rowlands, simply because her portrayal as Mabel Longhetti in A Woman Under the Influence is the greatest performance I've ever seen.

My personal favorite is Robert De Niro (with Al Pacino being on that list as well). However, I think a case could be made for Dennis Hopper, Johnny Depp and Gary Oldman among many others. Those 3 guys are just phenomenal who come to mind quickly.

You definitely should see Malcolm X whenever you get a chance. It's my personal favorite Spike Lee joint.

As for Denzel, I love him as an actor (he's one of my favorites). However, I feel the Oscar that year for Best Actor belonged to Russell Crowe for his work as John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. I still don't know why the Academy gave it to Denzel over him? I think his role was easier than Crowe's.

Marlon Brando gets the nod, for me. And not even for his role in The Godfather (which was great.)

On the Waterfront is my favorite Brando film, and his greatest performance, IMO.

A great Morgan Freeman film which is very underated is "A Power Of One".Not seen for years though
