I would suggest that you start by contacting the American Consulate. There probably is one in Palermo, Messina, or Syracusa. You have to go there anyway to obtain your visa.

Very good, Olivant. Cassano all' Ionio, Cosenza, the same town as my paternal grandparents. Although, his people were from Laurapoli and my grandparents were from Doria, those are just neighborhoods. To put it in perspective, they're about as far apart as Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. They call themselves Cassanesi.
Now, my maternal grandparents, were from a very small town in Basilicata, called Stigliano. They call themselves Stiglianesi and they taught me to look down on Neapolitans, but I never did
