we all know that sonny laid carlos a heavy beating after sonny saw his sister all beat up. in the book puzo wrote that carlos felt himself equal if not stronger then sonny, and the only reason he did not strike back was so that he could live to see another day. what im asking is if it was just the two of them whom do you guys think would win? now don't be bias to sonny, think this through.

I don't care if Carlo had survived twelve rounds with Joe Louis, Sonny would have won because of that famous temper.

If they had scheduled a fight in a ring, in advance, Carlo would have stood a chance. But in the street, surrounded by Sonny's men, with Sonny's temper flaring and his own guilt branding him a coward, Carlo never had a prayer.

well guys i believe sonny would have won. but consider this: because sonny is foolish with his temper wouldn't it be to carlos' advantage. grin

Thats a good point mr. soprano. Sonny did become rather foolish when he became angry, which proved to be his undoing.

This is a tough one. While Santino had an edge with rage, Carlos had an awful lot of practice beating on Connie.

In the book, Sonny was also much more massive, more "Hulk-like" than Caan portrayed in the movie (although Caan played the role fabulously). wink

Well we all know that Carlo won in the end i.e sonny's shooting. But man to man? I reckon itd be close but Carlo on first viewing does appear very muscly (see the shower scene with Connie) and potentially brutal.

Nah, Carlo wasn't one-on-one with Sonny, he had about 10 guys with machine guns. That's a distinctly unfair advantage. wink

in all reality in the movie there are some scenens where carlo looks bigger then sonny, though i do recall that there are scenes where it's vice versa. but what if carlos was to land that one good punch that would knock out sonny.

A controlled fight? Carlo. Sonny's temper, sure, but discipline beats a raging bull anyday. Saying that, Carlo was a woman beater, and they don't come much worse than that. He wasn't the wisest guy either. So I'd still say Sonny. smile

I'm really not a good judge of who might be stronger, unless one guy is obviously bigger than the other.

Of course, I suppose I'd be a little biased toward Sonny, but I think in the case of a physical fight, a quick temper like Sonny's would be an advantage with the adrenelen pumping and all. Of course to most of us Carlo wasn't a likeable character, and seeing him get the s**t beaten out of him somehow seemed like a case of "just desserts". smile

If it's just man-to-man (no weapons) or protection by others, Carlo wins. Like Turnbull stated, Carlo is a bigger guy than Sonny. In the book, Puzo describes Carlo's physique. But if Sonny fought dirty, he could keep it interesting. Then again, Sonny (Caan) could use his thick back hair to suffocate Carlo! lol

On a strictly physical level I'd pick Carlo to win the fight (Puzo described Carlo as being physically stronger) but taking into account the mental state of the combatants (Sonny's "desire" for revenge against his sister's beater, plus Sonny's temper) I'd put my money on Sonny. There's more to a fight than just physical strength.
