In the family tree it says Carlo Rizzi was blackmailed by Barzini....OK. Can anyone throw any light on this for me please? I thought he helped with the plot on Sonny after all the humiliation and beating he endured, but no, it definately says he was blackmailed.
I did a search and found an old thread from 12 month ago by Turi, it didnt come to any conclusions and I dont want to be accused of being an archeologist by digging it up after such a length of time

There is no evidence that Carlo acted against Sonny for any motive other than revenge for the beating and humiliation he suffered. We can speculate all we want about what Carlo might have done that put him in a position to be "blackmailed" by Barzini. But the most likely explanation is that the Family Tree "biographer" made a mistake. Period. The "biographer" made another serious error re. Carlo: In the "tree" section, his death is incorrectly listed as 1954. But when you select Connie/Carlo, his death is correctly listed as 1955.

OK, thats it, the "biographer" gets whacked. Turnbull, your a good man...the jobs yours

After I wrote my comments about Carlo in the Trilogy sections, I went to starbucks for a skim Tazo Chi. I asked myself that same question, because I think he was lured in it by Bazini. We heard a women telling Connie that he could not make the date. I don't think Carlo will give a huzzy the home phone number so that Connie can whine that to her family.
This is just my guess, but I think Bazini was behind the phone call, which caused the arguement and fight. Sonny's involvement, and as Turnball stated, the BIG MAN was humilated by Sonny. Now, Barzini steps in...we know the story.

I would say it's both Carlo's wanting to get back at santino AND Barzini blackmailing him.
I bet Barzini blackmailed him because he was doing something naughty and thretened to expose him..probably some dirty business in his bet placing job he got. I dunno.
But I was sad to see carlo killed in the book.
I was happy to see him go in the movie. Because the book kinda shows y'know Carlo's side and stuff.

First time I have ever heard of the blackmail thing...will try and look again. He may have been played along, but Blackmail? I don't know, but I may have missed that in the novel.
