Can someone explain to me what a Video CD is. What's the difference between that and a DVD? If you don't play a VCD on a DVD player then howdo you play one?

A VCD is played in your computer CD-ROM drive. It just video, nothing special about it (and not nearly the quality of DVD)... most I believe are bootlegs from tapes, so they're not that great, but okay if you don't have any other options...

Actually, VCDs are generally made off DVDs, at least in the U.S. In Asia, VCDs are often sold by the distributor directly; I have a couple Japanese movies that were never released on DVD, but were released on VCD.

Most DVD players will play VCDs. There are actually standalone VCD players but you don't see them in the United States.

They definitely lack the quality of DVDs but usually are better looking than VHS tapes.

I'm thinking about making my own GF VCD set once my DVDs arrive, so I can insert the cut scenes in the proper places.

Yeah, thanks for the international perspective on VCDs; but I will say that they do pre-date DVD, so, it's just the video source becoming better than in the past since DVDs came out.

When I get a DVD burner, I can't wait to make a definitive DVD edit grin

Try looking on eBay. I've found a number of VCD titles there (for films that are not yet available on DVD).
