Are you sure about that J Geoff?

I thought that Tony and Silvio were supposed to be close in age, but James Gandolfini is eleven years younger than Steve Van Zandt in real life.
Their daughters are the same age in the series too, so that would suggest that their characters (Tony and Silvio)were of a similar age.

Also, James Gandolfini was born in 1961; In Season 1 there is a flashback to Tony's youth in 1967 and he is supposed to be eight or nine, so he would have been born in more like 1958/59.

It is surprising but cast ages often are greatly
different from the ages of the characters they
portray. For example Marlon Brando was only seven years older than Robert Duvall and only 15 years older than James Caan in Godfather Part 1. Admittedly, Brando was heavily made up but it is a classic example of a character being aged to fit the role.

Going back to the Sopranos, James Gandolfini (Tony)is actually only 41, making him 19 years younger than Tony Sirico(Paulie). I don't think it affects things, just that James Gandolfini looks older than he is and Tony Sirico looks younger! I would be guessing on exact details about the ages of the characters. But I would guess that Silvio and Tony are in their early forties and that Pussy and Paulie are somewhere in their mid forties to early fifties. There is reference in the episode where Paulie goes to see a psychic that he whacked one guy over thirty years ago. On the other hand Paulie could have already been clipping guys from his pram

Remember in series one there is a flashback scene to Tony's childhood - the year is 1967 and I believe Tony was around eight so it would make sense that he be in his early forties now.
