on the dvd mario said he wanted to make GF4 about a young sonny and how he came about in the "business", set in the 20s. personally i think thats a great idea. they should intercut(like GF2) showing what vincent is doing compared to what sonny was doing. like mike and vito. another cool thing would be a story about fredo, but w/o puzo the inventing the writers would have to do....it might ruin the character

if you look through all the topics of this GF4 forum long enough, you will find out that the most common and likeable idea for a GF4 (except those who hated the Vincent character) is the Vincent vs Sonny (father vs son) idea. My guess is, knowing how Hollywood works, it's the rise of Sonny vs the fall of Vincent (just like GFII, because Sonny has his fall in GF1 just as Vito, while Michael ('falling' in GFII) has his rise in GF1 as well, and Vincent in GFIII)...

I am one of those who doesn't want the Vincent character if there is a GF4. I just don't think of Vincent as a Corleone. However, if they do make a GF4, I agree with Pherdy that it will be about the Vincent character (since all reports show how interested Garcia is to play the role) and Sonny flashbacks!!

You have to think of Vincent as a Corleone he is leading the family into the future.

If there was no Vincent the family wouldn't have a future.

that somewhere could well be here, because the project as well as him being cast has been mentioned a million times already

Leonardo DiCaprio might be named because of his starpower. His presence at the Gangs of New York project made the movie being realized after a endless-nowheregoing-pre production of over 25 years! I guess if he actually was attached to GF4, it would already have been made (something Andy Garcia can't)

Scott Caan as Sonny would be the obvious choice of course

my concern, if I was still interested in IV, which I'm not anymore, for a change would be who's directing it?

who do you think?

Because we know Francis Coppola won't do it, and I bet Martin Scorsese is too much to hope for.

I think David Chase (The Soprano's), Robert DeNiro himself or Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition) could do a good job.

deniro sounds like a good choise. it probably wont be the same as the others though,w puzo dead and ffc wont do it. i dont really care about it too much either because if its made it'll most likely be f*cked up, but its kind of that what if question

he has only directed one movie so far (one coming up starring himself and Leonardo DiCaprio), but that was quite good (very "Scorsesian", a little brother to Casino and Goodfellas): A BRONX TALE.

no doubt DeNiro is not interested in GF4, but maybe if you think of it it's the last hope for the project. Without Coppola (and Puzo) you've got nothing, but DeNiro has the power the bring the thing to life

true, but with any other director, it will probably turn out to be just another mob movie other than a godfather movie. nothing against other mob movies, but the godfather is the defining film for that genere

I have been thinking about this a lot the last two, three days, and I don't believe that is true. The Godfather is NOT a mafia film, and definitely not one that shows the mafia in the most real form. But we all know Vito was a Don, and Tessio a capo. We know there are five families and there are consiglieri's, so yes the setting is the organized crime, LCN underworld.

First of all this does not keep The Godfather from being a human story (NOT a mob story, as opposed to Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco). Second of all, the movie does not fit in to the gangster genre of the early 70's, or any gangster description, and is certainly not similar to mob movies we know that were made before, or (most of all) later.
