We'll never really know, Francesca, because the roots of what we call the "Mafia" today are too obscure and too hidden in secrecy for us to find a real clue. Crime has been around since Cain killed Abel. Criminal organizations that were organized and combined banditry with politics, existed in every country and civilization, in every era. Often they functioned as local quasi-goverments, especially during periods of foreign domination and corrupt officials. The equivalent of the "Mafia" can be found in the histories of most countries, let alone various regions of Italy (although Italy's regions had a higher-than-average history of domination by foreign powers). Since these "Mafia"-like groups operated in secrecy, we won't find an official history or a founders' certificate. Instead, various historians arbitrarily fix on a significant incident to claim the "beginning" of the group.
