The recent conviction of Peter Gotti for plotting to kill Sammy Gravano after he became a government witness made me wonder, has there ever been a case where an informant who testified in court and then entered the witness protection program (or not in the case of Gravano), was then found by his former mafia cohorts and killed?

I know active rats working behind the scenes have been killed before they fully flipped and testified, but has there ever been a high profile case where a publicly known rat was later found and killed?

I dream in widescreen.

Plenty of rats paid the price. One that you might be familiar with was Willie Boy Johnson, an associate of Gotti's. He was an FBI informant, and at Gotti's RICO trial, the prosecutor, Diane Giacalone, exposed him as an informant. Gotti told him he would get a pass, but three years after the trial, Gotti arranged to have him whacked outside his home.

Even though i don't like rats,i thought the Willy Johnson case was tragical.Giacalone shouldn't have exposed him,the way she did...

Before there was a Sammy Gravano there was Abe "Kid Twist" Reles.

Abe Reles was arrested on a murder charge. He was accused of being involved in a whole bunch of murders. When he was convinced that he would be sent to Sing Sing Prison, he decided to become an informant. The information that Reles gave led to the arrest and electrocution of one of his bosses, Louis "Lepke" Buchalter.

On November 12th 1941, Abe "Kid Twist" Reles, under the protection of six police detectives, mysteriously flew from the window of room 623 of the Half Moon Hotel, in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Five - ten years from now, they're gonna wish there was American Cosa Nostra. Five - ten years from now, they're gonna miss John Gotti.

That flight earned him the sobriquet: "The canary who could sing but couldn't fly."

..no indeed. She took a lot of flack for that tragic miscue, and some others that made many believe that she practically handed the victory to her adversary, Bruce Cutler, Gotti's lawyer.

Was it not the Abe "Kid Twist" Reeles who "jumped" out of a window to his death while in police custody?
