Which gangster managed to die of natural causes and as a free man? Just a few on top of my head:

Carlo Gambino
Lucky Luciano
Joe Bonnano

Any others?

Frank Costello, Meyer Lansky, Joe Profaci, Joe Magliocco, Tony Accardo, Santos Trafficante, Al Capone, and Carlos Marcello just to name a few.

In fact, most of them didn't die by the sword. And the only one who was executed by the government was Louis (Lepke) Buchalter.
The trick is to find a Don who never served a day in prison. Not easy.

After Prohibition was repealed, Gambino participated in a racket to sell booze without paying Federal taxes. In 1939, he was arrested for conspiracy to avoid paying liquor taxes and was sentenced to nearly two years in prison. After eight months, the conviction was reversed. He was free, but he'd lost eight months of his life to prison. The government arrested him several times as an "illegial alien," but he always beat that rap.

Interesting Turnbull, i always thought that Carlo Gambino never served 1 day in prison, i think nearly everybody did. Every site will tell that lie:).

And what about Tony Accardo?

I do know one: Donnie Brasco;)

"Lefty" Ruggiero died of a heart attack in his home back in 1995.

Accardo was indicted four times for various crimes. In the most serious, he was indicted, tried, convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for tax evasion. But his lawyers got the conviction overturned on appeal. He appeared once in a lineup of criminals suspected of murder and was held in contempt of Congress, but again, he didn't go to jail. He boasted that he never spent a night in jail, and he may have been telling the truth.

Lansky served three months in a county lockup in Saratoga Springs, NY, in the early '50's for a gambling conviction. He took it philosophically, as a fallout from the Kefauver hearings.
