what if Neil was named boss insted of Paul after Gambino died, where do you think the family would be today?

Hard to say, GF. Unlike Castellano, "Mr. Neil" was widely respected within the Gambino Family. But one of the reasons that Carlo Gambino didn't choose him was that he was well known to law enforcement--in fact he was just finishing up a five year sentence for tax evasion when Gambino died. Had Dellacroce been named Don, Castellano and his faction might have gone along with it because they lacked the muscle to contend with Dellacroce and his followers. But law enforcement would have been all over him like white on rice. As it was, Dellacroce was hit with a RICO indictment at about the same time as Castellano and three of the four other Dons. Ony death in December 1985 saved him from trial and probable conviction.
Now, here's the interesting speculation, imo:
Castellano had a low profile as head of the Gambino's "white collar" branch. If he hadn't been named Don, Castellano might have escaped a RICO indictment. Had Dellacroce lived, and gone to prison, he might have tried to run the family from behind bars. Then there might have been a war between Gotti, Neil's protege, and Castellano. I think Castellano would have had a chance of defeating Gotti. Why? Because a lot of people in the Gambinos resented Gotti's brash, loudmouth, in-your-face behavior. They supported Gotti after he whacked Castellano because Castellano's cheapskate, standoffish behavior as Don for nine years pissed them off, so Gotti was the lesser of two evils. But if Castellano hadn't been Don, they might have seen him as the lesser of two evils. But, even if Dellacroce named Gotti as his successor before he died, Gotti still would have run the Gambino Family into the ground, just as he did after he whacked Castellano.

Yea. That's exactly right. The Daily news fella' (Forgot his name), whose a Mafia expert, said that the Brooklyn faction was loyal to Castellano while the Manhattan faction despised him.

There were many What if questions I had on my mind.

1. Like what if Lucky arranged the death of Maranzano first before Masseria?

2. What if Bonnano succeeded in killing Gambino, Luchese, his cousin, the L.A. Don, and all others on his hitlist?

3. What if Gambino stayed loyal to Anastasia instead of siding with Genovese?

4. What if Genovese was never set up to atke the fall of a drug deal and ruled LCN?

If Luciano had been loyal to his boss (Masseria) and killed Maranzano, Masseria and Luciano probably would have been killed by the remaining Castellemmares families, who were bigger and stronger than Masseria's mob. (Don't forget the support Maranzano got from his fellow Castellemmarese, Stefano Magaddino of Buffalo, which passed to his cousin, Joe Bonanno.)

2. What if Bonnano succeeded in killing Gambino, Luchese, his cousin, the L.A. Don, and all others on his hitlist?
Though Bonanno might not have tried to declare himself Boss of Bosses, he would have acted like one. Probably his first move would have been to try to disband the Commission. Then probably he would have named his son Salvatore (Bill) as his underboss and successor. Both moves would have set off a major war, both within the Bonannos and in the Commission, since not many thought of Bill as boss material.

3. What if Gambino stayed loyal to Anastasia instead of siding with Genovese?
Anastasia had only one ally: Frank Costello, and Genovese had forced him to retire. By 1957, Charlie Luciano's influence had waned sufficiently for Vito Genovese to fully assert himself in all his ruthlessness. He was far too clever and determined to let anything stand in his way. Imo, both Gambino and Anastasia eventually would have been whacked by Genovese.

4. What if Genovese was never set up to atke the fall of a drug deal and ruled LCN?
Lucchese would have fallen into line. But Genovese would have had to reach an accommodation with Profaci and Bonanno, neither of whom would submit to a "Boss of Bosses." Otherwise, a war would have broken out.

I don't think Genovese would have out done Anastasia.
