But the phones were supplied by the FBI, and came complete with wiretaps already installed. The mobsters swallowed the story, and "spent months happily blabbing on the phones about 'family business', alll the while incriminating themselves to the feds." You can't make up stuff like this. "Difficult....not impossible"
