In regards to Joseph Pistone"aka Donnie Brasco". I knew there was a contract out on his life. Is that contract still in affect, or has it been cancelled?

I heard that it had been cancelled.

According to crimelibrary.com, it was a myth all along...

"Joseph Pistone retired from the FBI in 1986. He lectures at the academy at Quantico, has written two books, served as research consultant on the hit movie of his story, “Donnie Brasco” and has recently been involved in a television series on the Mafia. It was claimed that the Mob put a contract out on him for $500,000. The FBI took it seriously enough to approach Paul Castellano when he was boss of the Gambino family and apparently the most powerful crime figure in New York to make sure nothing happened to Pistone. It was probably a myth, like so much of Mob lore, but Pistone is prepared just in case and always travels with a .38 packed on his hip."

And keep in mind that the $500k "contract" may have been a fiction from the beginning. Organized crime is nothing if not greedy and selfish. Why would the entire Mafia chip into a contract when only the Bonannos were damaged? And if they did, and it were found out, it'd make a prima facie RICO case even if Pistone were never damaged. My guess: Pistone made it up. Castellano went along with the fiction that he "knew about" and could "stop" the "contract" as a way of incurring some gratitude from the FBI.

But if agents really did approach Castellano and he did call off the so called contract. Surely that would be conspiracy to murder on Big Paulies part.

The Mafia also does not target law officials. It would be rediculous to because it brings far too much heat on their activities. And after the Donnie Brasco operation they'd have to be stupid to bring further more heat to themselves.

Agent Pistone did amazing work undercover and his novel and film as Brasco are fantastic. Truly good stories. I think he may have heard something to the effect of a 500K bounty on him and took as more than hear say and played it up.
