Fanucci was slightly based on Don Vito Casio Ferro, there are many other references but I am extremly tired. I am sure others will post.

The Don Ferro

And you liar, teller of tall tales: you trample all the Lord's commandments underfoot, you murder, steal, commit adultery, and afterward break into tears, beat your breast, take down your guitar and turn sin into a song. Shrewd devil, you know very well that God pardons singers no matter what they do, because he can simply die for a song.

Maranazano was a real guy and the character from the Godfather novel, Maranzella was heavily based upon him.

Don Lauren, great question. The Godfather has alot of characters based on real life Mafia figures. Eg.

Godfather - There was Moe Green, the Las Vegas guy. The inspiration for him must have came from real life Bugsy Seagal. Johnny Fontaine had alot in common with Frank Sinatra (which in real life it was said that Sinatra came eye to eye with Puzo because of it). The egotistical Bill Bonanno thinks Michael Corleone was based on him and Vito on Bills father but that, to me, is purely Bill Bonanno's imagination. There's a few similarities but most of it is daft.

Godfather II - For now all I can think of is Hyman Roth. The real life counterpart for him was Meyer Lansky. Except Lansky in real life wasn't killed but died of natural causes.

Godfather III characters; Don Luchese and the Gods banker were based on Giulio Andreotti and Roberto Calvi respectively.

So die all who betray Giuliano
