ummmm there was no need for a poll for this but ok.

It is right at the beginning of GF2 when Vito comes over from Sicily. He doesn't speak to the person so the person sees Corleone, Sicily and calls him Vito Corleone.

I chose the second one.

Couldn't be a grammar question.....

There's no correct answer.

How, when, where does Vito's name change to Corleone

Should be "and" where, and have a question mark.

How, when and where does Vito's name change to
Corleone?

Should be a comma after "when".

"Difficult....not impossible"

confused What kind of a poll is this? Why does it have the same question to choose from? Cancer Kitty, after looking at the poll the only conclusion that I can come to is the one that you came to, thinking that this is a grammer question! "Choose the proper grammer should be the poll title! But our esteemed Plaw has taken care of the answer for us anyway! Thanks Buddy!
Bob Corson, can you tell us what your objective is here? confused

So what do you suggest we do now?

By the way, I never understood why there should be a comma before "and" in that case. After all "and" is a separator by itself. ohwell

I was always told that the comma before "and" was optional and pretty much depended on who you were writing it for preferred.

Cancerkitty- I'm with you - I always thought that a comma before 'and' was optional. Last year I took a refresher grammar seminar for work and they said to add the comma - I still fight it because I don't remember learning that in school, it seems odd.
By the way, BobCorson - good topic!

I always put it in unless told otherwise. I just think it looks weird without it. "Milk, eggs and bread." That's just weird.

How - The immigration officer was too lazy to note down the correct name.

When - When his parents are killed by Don Ciccio, he flees sicily and lands in newyork. Year, I dunno.

Where - Newyork sea port. Immigration office.

In a series of 3 or less items, only a comma is used after the first item in the list. EXAMPLE:

I BOUGHT ORANGES, APPLES AND PEACHES FOR LUNCH.

When you have more than three items in a series, commas are used after all items prior to the "and". EXAMPLE:

HER NEW OUTFIT CONSISTED OF SHOES, SKIRT, BLOUSE, AND EARRINGS.

Don Cardi, When I was in school which is not very long time ago I was told that the comma before "and" is redundant no matter how many words were separated by comma before, which sounds very logical to me. But lately when I was preparing some specifications my boss told me to put this comma before "and", no matter what the case was. lol

Okay, I just checked three seperate grammar books that I happen to have (english/writing major in college) and two of them said it was optional, one said that you shouldn't put the comma before "and". Weird.

We're just clowning with you Bob, we don't mean any disrespect, just some ribbing, that's all. Welcome to the boards! If you've never been addicted to anything in your life, get ready. Once you're in, you're in for good, unless you're kicked out, which only happens in the most extreme cases. In any case, its good to have you on board. Welcome to the family! smile

"A Writer's Reference" Fifth Ed., (2003 MLA Update)

Quote from page 237:

USE A COMMA BETWEEN ALL ITEMS IN A SERIES.

Unless you are writing for a publication that follows another convention, separate all items in a series--including the last two--with commas.

Ex: Bubbles of air, leaves, ferns, bits of wood, and insects are often found trapped in amber.

Although some publications omit the comma between the last two items, be aware that its omission can result in ambiguity or misreading.

Ex: My uncle willed me all of his property, houses, and warehouses.

Did the uncle will his property AND HOUSES AND WAREHOUSES--or simply his property, consisting of houses and warehouses? If the first meaning is intended, a comma is necessary to prevent ambiguity.

Ex 2: The activities include a search for lost treasure, dubious financial dealings, much discussion of ancient heresies, and midnight orgies.

Without the comma, the people seem to be discussing orgies, not participating in them. The comma makes it clear that MIDNIGHT ORGIES is a separate item in the series.

AND FOLKS, IT GETS EVEN TRICKIER:

Use a comma between coordinate adjectives not joined by AND. Do not use a comma between cumulative adjectives.

TO LEARN WHY THE RULES ON COMMA USAGE IN A SERIES HAVE SPARKED DEBATES, GO TO:

www.dianahacker.com/writersref

~~ Lolly

P.S. The MLA Convention is the second most used convention in publication writing, the first being the APA (American Psychological Association).

"Sono una roccia; Sono un'isola...una roccia non ritiene dolore; un'isola non grida mai."

I think it's great that people feel just as passionatey about comma useage as they do about politics and religion.

With all due respect of MLA convention rules, Italian grammar is apparently different. I'm too old to change....I'm not going to put a comma before "and", sorry! tongue

Lollie, Webster dictionary states the same thing. Apparently omitting the last comma can be confusing. But we were taught British English in the school and also this punctuation is very wrong in Persian so I assume that this has to be an American thing. To us non-Americans this is just plain weird and also wrong. I guess we just have to agree to disagree. By the way Welcome Bob. I hope you enjoy your stay here! smile

Afsaneh - I never even considered the difference might be between British and American English rules. I know we (Americans) do quotations and a few other things differently (like dropping the "u" in words like color or armor and reversing the "r" and "e" on words like theater.)
