Do you think the Mafia is still alive?

I do...actually, I know they're still around.

What do you guys think?

Goodfella Lombardi, Welcome!!

If the mafia is still around, I feel sure it is nothing like it use to be. However in my opinion we have our own EXPERT here on the BB. Turnbull is real knowledgeable on real life crime figures. I am sure he will respond when he reads this. I do believe he knows what he's talking about!!!!!

well it's def around just not as powerful i think that John Gotti's death and with everyone thinking that it's over i think it could provide the mafia a chance to come back.

Guinea... just a tip... when you have more ideas to include in a thread just edit your initial post and put those in there instead of posting repeatedly.

Oh yeah the Mafia is still very active, tho it's more low key now. I don't believe the Mafia will ever completely fade out. But with Law Enforcement keeping up the pressure, I just don't see a comeback to the power they all enjoyed in their heyday. But then what do I know.

Just to let everyone know, this is my brother... That's why we have the same last name. Anyways, yeah, I'm positive there's a Mafia. I know a couple people involved with it. They're just keeping a pretty low profile. They'll probably never be as f*cking powerful as before, but they'll never completely fade away. That's just f*cking impossible! I agree with the guy who said this earlier. So, yeah, there is a Mob, I know people.

The mafia is still around yeah, but forget the old codes of honour (or spelt honor for the americans) there just thugs out to make a quick buck no morals no codes whoever gets killed gets killed, no honour amongst thieves anymore. Just dont get in their way, I believe right or wrong the old guys would turn in their graves if they knew what it become worse than common thieves.S**t their not even loyal to each other anymore

In his autobiography, Joe Bonanno claims his cousin, Stefano Magaddino, the don of Buffalo, kidnapped him because Magaddino was jealous of Joe's rise to power and was siding with the Commission in its dispute with Joe. Gay Talese, in his book about Salvatore (Bill) Bonanno,"Honor Thy Father," never really answers the question, though he gives a hint.
But the gangland.com site provides this insight:
"In October 1964, on the night before he was to appear before a federal grand jury looking into the upstate conclave [the famous Apalachin, NY meeting that was busted by the cops], two gunmen forced him into a car as he was walking with his attorney. For Bonanno, it was a great time to make himself scarce – family wiseguys were on his case for trying to make son Bill the family consigliere; the Commission was furious Bonanno had plotted to kill two of them – and not too many people thought he had been kidnapped."
Furthermore, the hint Talese provides in his book reproduces part of an FBI wiretap. two days later, of the phone of Sam (the Plumber) DeCavalcante, who was a Commission go-between in their efforts to get Bonanno to explain his apparent backing of an earlier coup (the attempted rubout of Carlo Gambino and Tommy Lucchese). DeCavalcante said on the tape:
"He [Bonanno] pulled that off himself [i.e., the kidnapping]...Well, who the hell is he kidding? He kidded the government..."It was his own men...we figured it was his kid and Vito De Filippo...This guy has got a lot of government appearances...but he left everybody in trouble."

You decide. Seems to me that Bonanno had ample reason to engineer his own disappearance. In 1929, Al Capone engineered his own arrest on a concealed weapons charge, and spent a year in a Pennsylvania prison, because things were getting too hot for him in Chicago and the rest of the country's mobsters were anxious for him to take a powder.

Thanks Turnbull

From what you said it sound more likely than not that he did stage his own kidnapping then. It almost sounds too suspect to be anything but. Assuming the whole "wire tapping" thing is correct, there's the proof right there.

As usual, you continue to amaze me with your knowledge and the details you know about these subjects and in the clear informative manner in which you explain them (for dummies like me)!!!!
Your are the best!!!!

There it is clear that Joe Bonnano was REALLY kidnapped!
Yes, Joe, I did read "A Man of Honor." Look back at my post: it was the first source I quoted. I acknowledged that Bonanno said Magaddino kidnapped him. Others thought differently.
My conclusion was (sorry to quote myself): "You decide." With Bonanno dead, no one will ever know for certain what happened with that disappearance. But, as I said, there was ample reason for Bonanno to have arranged his own disappearance.
