Who do you think is the MOST FAMOUS GANGSTER OF ALL TIME IS? Everyone here has their own opinion on who the greatest gangster is, but I want to know who everyone thinks is the most famous. Like their name is synonomous(sp?) with the term gangster.

My vote goes to Lucky Luciano.

Just a little question: Where are the Sicilians?

Contrary to popular belief, Unix is userfriendly. It just happens to be selective about who it makes friends with.

My vote went to ol' Scarface himself. The question was, who was the most famous, not the most dangerous, influential or powerful. With that in mind it has to be Alphonse....as for the rest.

It's Al Capone, simple as that over here in England, you ask anyone about Luciano and they have no idea. Probably even only 1 out of every 20 and probably more know about Gotti.

Capone. No one can argue in these parts of the world.

Absolutely Capone. The guy was as much a symbol of the Roaring Twenties as Babe Ruth and Charles Linddberg. But today, practically everyone knows Capone's name, not everyone remembers Ruth and Lindy.

I have to go with Capone. But, apart from mafia types, I would have to say John Dillinger was pretty legendary too in his day and one of my favourite people. The way they ambushed him outside that cinema was a disgrace, they ought to be ashamed, that was totally dis-honorable.
Sorry folks, I just like John Dillinger.

I too, had to go for Al Capone. It seems everybody knows who Al Capone is.

I voted for Al Capone as MOST FAMOUS; but want to give a write-in for Sam Giancanna.

I also agree that Dillinger should've at least been included in the list, but DON'T agree that his ambush murder was either disgraseful or dishonorable. This was the 1930's, that's how it was done. The guy escaped the law too many times, and had precided over quite a few ambushes himself. If he had to be set up, that's the way it goes...got what he deserved.

Not that it could EVER happen that way today.

Ya mean the infamous Lady in Red???

I believe she was a foreigner in the U.S. illegally, promised immunity from deportation by the feds if she set John D up for the kill. Turns out they went back on their word & she was shipped back (to Poland, I think) anyway.

Yes you're right, FH...it was Rumania.

Thanks,

PS - Here's a neat link to Dillinger's story. Maybe charming, but about as mean as they come...

Sorry folks, I just like John Dillinger. [/b][/quote]9/10 of Mafia Hits ARE Dishonorable!

No more dishonor than Gotti having his own boss murdered outside of a steak restaurant over a 9 year Vendetta. Luciano had his Boss Masseria killed by four other people while he was there, Masseria may not have realized Luciano betrayed him. Stefano Maggadino tried to kill his own Cousin. Maranzano was murdered in his office. Frank Scalise a famous Boss wasn't even given a chance to confront death, he was killed while buying oranges. Frank Costello was shot in the ear and lived to tell about it. Carmine Galante was killed while still chewing on his Cigar.

Are there ANY respectable hits?

EVERYBODY knows Scarface Al Capone.

Who ever heard of John Gotti? What about Don Vito Cascio Ferra..Sicily?

im presently reading a book about Sam "Momo" Giancana, "Mafia Princess". The powerful Don after Al Capone. His eldest daughter Antonette tells the story. Momo is one of the characters in the movie The Rat Pack.

Yeah....how old?

I am 43, and I've known about Dillinger for about 30 years. He's just part of American folklore (as are Capone, Bonnie & Clyde, Billy the Kid, etc.....)!!!
