In the Godfather and some other maffia movies such as the Sopranos they use the old names of titles such as Caporegime, Don and solders... In some other movies like Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco they use names like Made Members... anyone could explain the differense and in what families there titles are used?

Salvatore Maranzano (temporary) victor in the Castellemmarese War of 1930-31, is generally credited with creating the Five Family structure in New York, and with forming their hierarchies. Maranzano, who read Latin and enjoyed comparing himself to Julius Caeser, structured regimes inside families, each with a caporegime, captains and soldiers. Consigliere came later. Usage got kind of loose after that--Maranzano, a "moustache Pete," was assassinated on orders from Charlie Luciano (whom Maranzano had marked for death). Luciano then formed the Commission. Today it's hard to know if a consigliere outranks an underboss or vice versa. In one of the tapes the government made on Gotti, he's heard asking Sammy da Bull if he wants to be known as underboss or consigliere--"waddevuh makes youse feel better."

Some connected guys have more power than some made guys, Jimmy Burke for instance. In one of the Gf movies. I heard somebody say, to a button man. Don't come to me with your problems. You see your capo, he'll se the consigliere, and the consigliere will see me, etc. Besies Jimmy Burke, Luca Brasi rings a bell. DING! No. 1 soldier, Vito's personal hitman.
