In the Godfather and some other maffia movies such as the Sopranos they use the old names of titles such as Caporegime, Don and solders... In some other movies like Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco they use names like Made Members... anyone could explain the differense and in what families there titles are used?

yeah I know about that chain... but in Donnie Brasco it goes something like this:

Skipper just means captain like any armed forces would use the same slang. Capo(regime) = Captain/Skipper.

Donnie at the time of his peak was Connected. If he performed his task i'm sure the books would have been open and he would have been made.

Sonny Black at the time was skipper, just a captain and became close to Donnie. Because of this he told far too many secrets to an unmade guy that he shouldn't have done and later he dissapeared. Most likely due to the Administration of the Bonnano family and the others of NY.

Lefty very lucky to survive should have dissapeared too but fortunately was imprisonned.

Salvatore Maranzano (temporary) victor in the Castellemmarese War of 1930-31, is generally credited with creating the Five Family structure in New York, and with forming their hierarchies. Maranzano, who read Latin and enjoyed comparing himself to Julius Caeser, structured regimes inside families, each with a caporegime, captains and soldiers. Consigliere came later. Usage got kind of loose after that--Maranzano, a "moustache Pete," was assassinated on orders from Charlie Luciano (whom Maranzano had marked for death). Luciano then formed the Commission. Today it's hard to know if a consigliere outranks an underboss or vice versa. In one of the tapes the government made on Gotti, he's heard asking Sammy da Bull if he wants to be known as underboss or consigliere--"waddevuh makes youse feel better."

Technicaly the underboss outranks the consigliare and the consigliare has no real administrative power other than to settle inner family disputes. All the hierarchy though seems to be really based on how much muscle and respect you happen to have. Som soldiers are closer to the boss than some capos. Some connected guys have more power than some made guys, Jimmy Burke for instance.
