Not sure if this was touched on before but what is the percentage that the soldier has to give to his capo or the boss? Lets say a crew does a 10k score? what is the accepted cut that goes 'upstairs'? I've heard numbers from 10% to 50%. Also, does each family have different amounts or is it the same in all families?

Camillus is right: Whatever the traffic will bear. Or, as Don Corleone put it in the novel,"every man must measure his own greed." Excessive greed was one of the factors that brought Paul Castellano down.

In Donnie Brasco, after Sonny Black hits Bruno Kirby (I can't remember his characters name)on the nose when he mentions more parking meter scams, Sonny says he needs to kick 50 large upstairs monthly or it's his arse on the line. Now I don't know how true that was for the real Sonny Black but it seems quite reasonable. Due to inflation this monthly figure would have gone up over the years.

Tribute to the boss, was in most cases a way of getting or keeping respect from the underlings. Most bosses were in their own right very wealthy from their own legitamite businesses and would have been better off not taking too much dirty money from their from their street people's scams. But then again what's the point of being in the mob if you have to earn all your money legit. Joe Profaci had extensive holdings in the olive oil and tomato sauce importing buisness but still demanded a heavey tax from his family and was much hated for it. Gaetano Luchese also had many legitamite businesses in the garment and trucking industries and is rumored to have taken little or no tribute from downstairs. It didn't seem to make much difference though since they both died of natural causes while still in office and not in jail.
