For whatever reason there is a ton of gambling money to be made in Jersey, both north and south. I don't know if its because of second-generation ethnic groups that have a fair amount of money, but it's always been a place with a lot of books. And where there's degenerate gamblers, there's loan-sharks and extortion and bustouts...

I think people also forget that very few captains in any family want to live in their old neighborhoods--the New Yorkers are on the island or in New Rochelle or North Jersey, and plenty of the Philly guys are over the Walt Whitman in South Jersey.
