Depends where in Manhattan. You can find excellent deals around Alphabet City if you know where to look. That said, in general, Manhattan is very expensive.
Those places are getting fewer and farther between. Right up until about ten years ago, places like Vazac's Horseshoe Bar were the norm on the Lower East Side, not the exception.
One of my buildings is on West 8th Street, just off MacDougal. Try drinking in THAT neighborhood today on a budget. Not gonna happen. It's a shame.
