Caught THE WOLVERINE last night. Decent, engaging enough actioneer that's both an existential story and a Clint Eastwood-type movie with a well-paced, economical narrative of action, humor, and plot not getting in the way. Too bad the movie sorta jumps the rails in the 3rd act by being the cartoonish sillyness that up to then TW had refreshingly avoided. But regardless, an afternoon still worth seeing.

Or let's put it another way. This is a film where we have an immortal hero with retractable claws surviving a nuclear blast, a humanoid snake mutant villainess, another mutant who's a master samurai swordsman soothsayer, a ridiculous (and ridiculously entertaining) train sequence with characters using gravity to fight each other, heart surgery is done by hand through the chest. Yet the giant samurai robot is generally considered by most folks to be the absurd bridge too far. I consider this credit to a picture that (mostly) works.

(Be sure to stay in your seats and watch the mid-credits scene. Absolute joy, and sets up X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE past out next summer. Hell of a teaser!)
