The repentant Cosenza superboss Franco Pino was left without protection
The leader of Cosenza is out of the program but has never stopped collaborating. He was the first to reveal the summit held in Nicotera between the godfathers of the 'ndrine and the emissaries of Cosa Nostra to start the massacres

Franco Pino
The super repentant "dumped". Polished language, iron memory, storytelling ability, cunning: Franco Pino, the former godfather with the "ice-cold eyes", is considered a precious source . A sort of Calabrian version of Tommaso Buscetta, Angelo Siino, Antonino Calderone, Francesco Marino Mannoia because he had his hands in every deal and, often, the last word on the life and death of many people. Pino was the most powerful boss in the northern area of ??Calabria..

'Ndrangheta in Rome, 17 convictions for the leaders
From Radio Rome- March 20, 2024

«The first "Local" of the 'Ndrangheta in Rome, founded in 2015, operated for a long time, acting exactly in parallel with the State, with its own "dispute resolution" tools and with its own "executive procedures" , with consistent availability of weapons ». This is what we read among the reasons for the sentence pronounced at the end of the abbreviated trial by the preliminary hearing judge Tamara De Amici , in which seventeen defendants were convicted , eight of whom will serve sentences of between 10 and 20 years in prison. The latter punishment was established for Antonio Carzo , 64 years old, accused of being at the top of the first "local" cell of the Capitoline 'Ndrangheta . Above all, considered the founder of the Roman club after a meeting in Calabria. The preliminary hearing judge also sentenced Carzo's sons : Domenico to 16 years and 8 months , and Vincenzo to 15 years and 7 months. Francesco Calò was instead sentenced to 12 years . Vincenzo Alvaro is also involved in the investigation, called «Propaggine» , and will be judged according to the ordinary procedure. All defendants sentenced to sentences exceeding ten years are charged with mafia-style criminal association aimed (depending on the case) at robberies, extortion or money laundering .

ITALIAN MAFIA CLANS INFILTRATE LAKE GARDA HOLIDAY RESORTS
Kevin Eagan - Mar 17, 2024

Lake Garda in northern Italy has long been a popular destination for foreign tourists. Despite the partial closure of the famous "James Bond Road" Strada della Forra along the coast of Lake Garda, this hasn't changed. Many paths lead to this idyllic location, but according to a report by ORF, the Austrian TV Channel, it may not be as idyllic as it seems. Instead, the region has become a stronghold of organized crime and mafia clans.

ORF reported this last week under "Mafia Prepares Itself on Lake Garda." Organized crime is increasingly active in the north of Italy. Over the past few years, the broadcaster has described an increase in seizures and arrests in the Lake Garda region, painting a grim picture of the situation in this once-renowned holiday paradise.

Experts have reported that mafia clans have infiltrated communities on the southern shore of Lake Garda - particularly the holiday resort of Sirmione. According to ORF, the mafia's economic interests have increased significantly since the COVID-19 outbreak. Organized crime is widespread in the area, confirms journalist Valerio Morabito of Corriere della Serra, who has researched the topic for over 15 years. The four significant clans have settled in the area and launder their money by buying real estate, nightclubs, and gambling halls and interfering in tourist structures. The mafia organization 'Ndrangheta recently purchased a camping facility in Sirmione, which has since been exposed.

The authority has seized 286 properties, including apartments, land, and businesses. According to Morabito, this indicates the presence of organized crime. However, the mafia clans have evolved and now operate more discreetly in the background.

Meanwhile, Paola Pollini, the president of the Anti-Mafia Commission of the Lombardy Region, wants to monitor the mafia's activities at all levels. She believes criminal organizations are constantly changing and adapting to new technologies like cryptocurrency. Pollini emphasizes that many illegal activities are now organized digitally.

Petronà, from the clash between the Carpino and Bubbo clans to the Isola summit for peace: the new repentant and the feud in the woods, cracks in the mystery. Colosimo escaped an ambush. Maybe he knows a lot about the long blood trail

PETRONÀ – A bloody feud bloodied the woods of Presila until the Arena gang of Isola Capo Rizzuto ordered a mafia break between two families who had been at war for twenty years. Among the series of ambushes there is also the one which escaped the new repentant of the mountain gangs, Domenico Colosimo known as "'Ndrina" , who has been speaking for months with the investigators of the Catanzaro DDA, after his arrest last September. in the Karpanthos operation on the accusation of being a top exponent of the Carpino gang, opposed to that of the Bubbos. Perhaps he knows a lot about that war in which he allegedly took part, if the justice collaborator Danilo Monti defines him as a "shareholder".

In the Catanzaro mountains today the Crotone 'Ndrangheta dictates law, filling the void left by the Marcedusa boss Franco Coco Trovato, who, having moved to Lecco, projected the interests of his criminal organization to the North until becoming one of the leaders of the "consortium ” Lombard mafioso. That today is the area of ??influence of the Ferrazzo gang of Mesoraca. Seven out of 52 of those arrested in the Karpanthos operation are Mesorachians. Once upon a time, however, the last word had to be said by the Arena family of Isola Capo Rizzuto, who in 2006 had the strength to impose the diktat for pax. And at a table they had to shake the hands of those who had killed and those who had suffered the loss of close relatives. An end to the revenge, nipped in the bud what Colosimo perhaps had in mind to undertake, to respect the commitment made at the top in the locality of S. Anna di Isola in which he himself took part.

THE MYSTERY OF THE WOODS FEUD, THE STAGES OF THE MASSACRE
Let's retrace the years of lead, those on which the repentant could shed light. The series of bloody events pits the gangs historically operating in Petronà, the Carpino, known as "Tratraculo", and the Bubbo, known as "Bubbi". The Cervesi group, their branch in Cerva, is closely linked to the Carpino gang, where the municipality was subjected to anti-mafia raids following the arrest of the mayor Fabrizio Rizzuti in the Karpanthos operation. Blood began to be shed in Petronà on 18 August 1992. The first to fall is Gaetano Elia. His traveling companion, Giuseppe Colosimo, was also injured, while Alberto Carpino remained unharmed.

A year later, on 19 August, in Botricello, Santo Bubbo was killed and his brother-in-law Antonio Puccio was seriously injured. Murder and attempted murder committed, according to the sentences, by Alberto Carpino, Saverio Gentile and Luigi Scalese on behalf of Rodolfo Pane, the Belcastro boss and their ally. But the only one to be taken to prison when the sentence becomes final is Scalese, because Carpino and Gentile in the meantime are murdered in turn. Carpino, on February 4, 2000, was murdered by three men with their faces covered in the bar in the central square of the town.

Meanwhile, others fall into the clash between opposing factions. The dramatic count continues with a case of white lupara because on 1 October 1993, in Morbegno, in the province of Sondrio, the disappearance of Giuseppe Colosimo was reported. On the following 23 October in Lecco a commando attempted to kill Vittorio Talarico, uncle of Gaetano Elia and Giuseppe Colosimo. Only three days later, on 26 October, Saverio Gentile was the victim of an ambush and at the same time Ettore Talarico was injured.

THE FIVE YEARS OF TRUCE FROM 1995 TO 2000
In '95 the truce took over, abruptly broken on 4 February 2000 with the excellent murder of Alberto Carpino, killed by three men with covered faces who went into action in the central Macondo bar. The investigations do not allow the killers to be identified but they document the Carpinos' revenge plan. From an information from the Carabinieri it emerges that Filippo and Raffaele Bubbo, leading elements of the clan of the same name, end up in the crosshairs. The conflict worsened on 25 October 2001 when Luigi Antonio Turello, close to the Carpinos, was murdered.

The response of fire was on 2 July 2003, the victim being Eugenio Gentile, affiliated with the Bubbos. Giuseppe Rocca, a member of the Carpino, was injured in the circumstance. On 8 July 2003 the clash moved to nearby Cerva where Giuseppe Iervasi, a Carpino man, was murdered. On 13 October 2003, Angelo Sculco fell in Andali, near the Carpino family. On May 12, 2004, in Petronà while he was returning home, unknown persons attempted to kill Domenico Colosimo. On 13 September 2005, in Andali, near his home, Luigi Barberio was killed, close to Angelo Sculco's group. The last one died on 10 April 2006, in Terranova Bracciolini, in the Arezzo area, where the brothers Angelo and Ettore Talarico were murdered.
A string of murders committed over almost twenty years.

THE MYSTERY OF THE WOODS FEUD, THE PEACE SUMMIT
The summit that seals the peace is held on Isola Capo Rizzuto, in the locality of S. Anna. Exponents of the Carpino and Bubbo gangs take part, but also Tommaso Scalzi, trusted man of the boss Franco Coco Trovato. For Arena there is Paolo Lentini, known as “Pistola”. Despite his nickname, it is he who establishes the cessation of weapons. The Arenas decide to involve Coco Trovato who, once he moved to Lecco, as told by the repentant Giuseppe Liperoti, former cashier of the Grande Aracri di Cutro gang, had lost interest in Calabria. Petrona and Sersale, first, were «'ndrina di Marcedusa», then «the “local” moves to Mesoraca and recognizes Mario Donato Ferrazzo as leader», says Liperoti.
In short, today the Mesorachesi dominate in Presila. Who knows if the new justice collaborator will also talk about current criminal dynamics.

The repentant Emanuele Mancuso and the 'institutionalised' clan: "I'll explain how my family has changed"
Son of Pantaleone, alias "The Engineer", he decided to collaborate with justice, effectively undermining the criminal prestige of one of the most feared 'Ndrangheta gangs
March 24, 2024
08:43
Todo Modo , the new investigative program hosted by Emilia Brandi, aired last night, starting at 9.45pm, on Rai3 . The first episode focused on Calabria, 'Ndrangheta and feminicide with Nicola Gratteri , a magistrate under guard, known for his strenuous battle against organized crime. The focus covered three very current stories linked to the criminal grip of the clans for the possession and control of the territory, starting with that of Maria Chindamo , a 42-year-old businesswoman killed in 2016.

During the episode, the exclusive interview conducted by Alessandro Gaeta, of Tg1, with Emanuele Mancuso , son of Pantaleone, known as "The Engineer", one of the leading exponents of the 'ndrangheta clan of Limbadi, was broadcast . Emanuele himself decided to break the mafia code of silence, choosing to collaborate with justice and effectively undermining the criminal prestige of one of the most feared 'Ndrangheta gangs.

Emanuele Mancuso and the rites of affiliation
“The rites of affiliation with the 'ndrangheta – explained the justice collaborator – are necessary but not in families like mine. I didn't do any rituals because I was born and raised in one of the most prestigious 'Ndrangheta families. I already felt like I belonged. Usually this affiliation rite is used to give motivation to those young people who were 'simple' criminals, outside of this context. So to make them grow within these structures, they were affiliated with rituals. For women it was different: they didn't perform rituals, but were active 24 hours a day. They aim to raise their children with certain values, the 'Ndrangheta ones”.

Divorce in the 'Ndrangheta family
What if the marriage goes into crisis? “They cannot divorce,” stated Mancuso, who explains that this is due to two reasons: “One, because if the woman decides to start a new life, she is disrespectful to her children, her husband and the entire family. If, however, it is a small affiliate, it depends on how much he was involved in the criminal life. I still remember the messages my mother gave me today: one was 'better to go to prison than hear the bells ringing'; and another was 'if you mind your own business, you don't die'. Because whoever speaks dies. These are values ??that are instilled in your head since you were a child."

The role of Luigi Mancuso
A prominent element of the Mancuso clan is Luigi , alias 'The Supremo' or 'The Dancer' . “Steps counted, words counted. Everyone fell in love with him. I, for example, was willing to do anything for him. On a criminal level, it's the best. He wasn't violent. He brought two people, who perhaps had shot each other the day before, to make peace. His word went beyond their hatred. His policy is one of pacification and silence. They were just doing business and making money. Many, when they heard of Gratteri's arrival in Catanzaro, equipped themselves with excavators and hid weapons, money and drugs underground."

Ways to convince Emanuele Mancuso not to collaborate
Both Emanuele Mancuso's daughter and partner were 'used' by the clan to convince him to change his mind and not 'repent'. “They offered me everything I wanted to get out of the protection program. Once the decision was made, the stain remained. Soon, however, they got down to business: they started not taking the little girl to prison, to turn her against me in every possible and imaginable way, to buy social services reports. I've seen all the colors. After my statements in the trial on the door of Matteo Vinci , my aunt Rosaria Mancuso took the stand and started screaming, not realizing, however, that her own statements were a sort of admission of the existence of a clan."

The fight against the 'Ndrangheta
The justice collaborator has no doubts about the fight against the 'Ndrangheta: “We need a cultural and social revolution and a strong state. The State does not want to win the battle. The 'ndrangheta entered at an institutional level through freemasonry and white collar workers. Part of my family, for example, is 'institutionalised'. They have made a leap in quality. The values ??remain the 'Ndrangheta ones. One ends being an 'ndrangheta supporter in two ways: either by collaborating or by death."

Monoray to publish journalist Sanne de Boer’s book about the world’s most powerful Mafia
RIGHTS
MAR 25, 2024
BY MELINA SPANOUDI

Monoray has acquired Mafiopoli, journalist Sanne de Boer’s book about the ’Ndrangheta — the “most powerful Mafia in the world”.

Publisher Jake Lingwood acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Lisette Verhagen at PFD, and the book will be published in hardback on 20th June 2024.

“Mafiopoli is the first comprehensive book to be published in English about the ’Ndrangheta and takes us deep inside this extraordinary criminal organisation,” the synopsis says. “The Monoray edition will feature a brand-new afterword on the ’Ndrangheta in the UK: how it has infiltrated the financial market, using shell companies based in the UK to carry out its business; and on its physical presence in Australia, where there’s a large Calabrian diaspora. Sanne de Boer also addresses how Italian and international law are responding to its ascendancy.”

The author will be visiting the UK for events to promote Mafiopoli, supported by New Dutch Writing, which is funded by the Dutch Foundation for Literature.

“Sanne has written, first and foremost, a stand-out work of terrific non-fiction in Mafiopoli,” Lingwood said. “In addition, she gives us incredible insight into a world where most of us would fear to tread. Her book redefines modern true crime/Mafia publishing and as the ’Ndrangheta spreads its influence, it more and more becomes terrifyingly essential reading.”

The author commented: “It’s a great pleasure for me to share Mafiopoli with an English-speaking readership. I wrote my book to make people outside Italy more aware of the global reach of a relatively little-known Mafia. By revealing what constitutes its power, I hope to take my readers on a journey that will change the way they look at the world.”

BALKANS, THE NEW FRONTIER OF 'NDRANGHETA DRUG TRAFFICKING
03/26/2024 This is what emerges from the latest investigation conducted by the Catanzaro Anti-Mafia District Directorate which stopped trafficking in narcotic substances destined for European markets
00Send To A FriendShrink FontEnlarge FontPrint The Page

by Raffaele Tricoli

New supply channels. And new drug trafficking routes: no longer (and not only) the warm shelters of the South American countries, but the Balkans with Albania in particular. The Calabrian 'ndrangheta does not loosen its grip on international traffic. And when it comes to dirty business there are no borders. This is what emerges from the latest investigation conducted by the Catanzaro District Anti-Mafia Directorate which stopped, this morning at dawn, trafficking in narcotic substances destined for European markets. The network which, from the Vibonese area, organized the transfer of large quantities of cocaine, heroin, hashish and marijuana from Albania to transfer it not only to Northern Italy but also to nearby Sicily, is under attack, demonstrating the managerial supremacy of the drug market assumed by Calabrian mafia on an international level.

11 people were arrested and 18 were investigated at the end of a blitz which involved the elite units of the Carabinieri. The investigation, according to what has been leaked, represents the natural continuation of a much broader and more complex anti-Ndrangheta activity, which in recent months has dealt a very severe blow to the Vibonese gangs: the Maestrale-Carthago investigation. In particular, the 'ndrine of Mileto and Zungri, historically strongholds of criminal power attributed to the powerful underworld families of the central area of ??Calabria, ended up at the center of the investigations conducted by the investigative unit of the provincial Carabinieri command. These are the people who ended up in handcuffs: Giuseppe Accorinti, “Peppone”, from Zungri; Salvatore Ascone, from Limbadi; Francesco Barbieri, from San Calogero; Angelo Bartone, from Mileto; Cono Rocco Fusca, by Cessaniti; Armando Galati, from Mileto; Domenico Galati, from Mileto; Michele Galati, from Mileto; Michele Silvano Mazzeo, “Stallone”, from Mileto; Giuseppe Navarra, from Rombiolo; Valerio Navarra, from Pernocari di Rombiolo. The suspects are Rocco Arena; Rocco Ascone; Bruno Chaplain; Francesco Mangone, Saverio Maesano; Laurentiu Gheorghe Nicolae; Simone Rettura.
Among the people in prison also Salvatore Ascone, who ended up on trial for the murder of Maria Chindamo, the businesswoman from Laureana di Borrello who disappeared at the age of just 44, while she was inside land owned by her in Limbadi, in the Vibo area. According to the repentants, she was murdered and her body fed to the pigs because she opposed the attempt by the Ascones - who the investigators believe to be closely linked to the Mancuso family of Limbadi - to take possession of her land.

'Ndrangheta boss Lanzino dies in Parma prison
AMTwo thousand March 26, 2024
Ettore Lanzino , 69 years old, boss of the Cosenza 'Ndrangheta, died this morning in Parma prison where he was detained under the 41bis regime after the final sentence issued in 2016 at the end of the "Terminator IV" trial. Lanzino, according to what was reported by one of his lawyers, the lawyer Marcello Manna , had a heart condition and had had a heart attack a few years ago when he was in Sassari prison. Following that illness, the lawyers asked for the sentence to be suspended, but obtained the transfer to Parma, a prison facility deemed adequate for treatment. This morning Lanzino died presumably due to another heart attack. "We have asked for a copy of the medical records and as soon as we have feedback we will know what happened" lawyer Manna told Ansa. Meanwhile, according to what we learn, the family members are reaching Parma to take the body to Cosenza where the funeral will be celebrated.

'Ndrangheta, house arrest granted to lawyer Bagalà
The professional had been in prison for over two years
AOSTA , 02 April 2024, 10:14

ANSA editorial team

In recent days, the court of Lamezia Terme ordered the release of the lawyer Maria Rita Bagalà, granting her house arrest at her home in Valle d'Aosta.

Defended by lawyer Aldo Ferraro, the professional is among the 29 defendants in Calabria in the Alibante trial, following an investigation by the Catanzaro DDA into the alleged 'Ndrangheta gang headed by her father, Carmelo Bagalà.
The lawyer had been in prison for over two years.

Arrested in May 2021 as part of the investigation, she was placed under house arrest in Valle d'Aosta. Then, in January 2022, the Court of Cassation rejected the appeal against the precautionary detention decided two months earlier by the Catanzaro Review: thus the prison doors were opened.
Meanwhile, the first degree trial in Lamezia Terme continues: the next hearing is set for July, to hear witnesses from the public prosecution. The sentencing date has not yet been set.

'Ndrangheta, weapons of war and drugs traveling from South America: 20 arrests between Rosarno and Genoa
From Iacchite-April 3, 2024

There is the 'ndrangheta in the international trafficking network of weapons, including war weapons, and drugs which led to the arrest of twenty-two people in prison, investigated in the operation, called Cook, conducted by the ROS carabinieri with the support of the carabinieri of Genoa, together with colleagues from Como and Reggio Calabria. The activity is the result of judicial and police cooperation ensured at European level by Eurojust and Europol.

“They imported large quantities of cocaine from Latin America, which was loaded onto ships bound for the port of Genoa – highlights the Genoa prosecutor Nicola Piacente, of the Public Prosecutor's Office, District Anti-Mafia Directorate – and, once recovered, thanks to the illicit collaboration of workers working in the city ports, then resold. They recovered loads of drugs destined for other criminal organizations, thanks to the possibility of the association to ensure these services, and were rewarded with a variable percentage (in money or cocaine), but around 20% of the imported product or with a sum equivalent, as compensation for the recovery of the cargo at the port.

“The association was directed by Gabriele Puleo – explains the Prosecutor – who had a network of contacts with South American drug trafficking organisations. The investigation is an offshoot of the 2015 operation which involved Giuseppe Bellocco, son of the boss Gregorio Bellocco of the 'ndrina of the same name in Rosarno. In addition to him, Gabriele Puleo and Igor Cerasa were arrested for the importation of 150 kilos of cocaine from South America. Those arrested had access to common weapons but also war machine guns."

“Gabriele Puleo, in fact, even after his arrest – informs the prosecutor – which took place on 7 October 2015 following the seizure of a significant quantity of cocaine (while he was trying to recover a load of 147,970 kg of cocaine, in competition with the fugitive Giuseppe Bellocco), despite being detained, he communicated with the other associates (among them Marco Cuoco, Vincenzo Puleo) by means of cryptophones or homemade encrypted communication systems, continuing to organize and finance the importation of new loads of cocaine from Colombia and the Dominican Republic, and destined for Italy, via the port of Genoa, Paris airport, Amsterdam airport.

'NDRANGHETA
Rocco Ursini disappeared in 2009, new clue on the lupara bianca case: «At dinner for a party but they had already dug his grave»
In the interceptions of the Echidna investigation, Giuseppe and Domenico Pasqua recall the crime that links Locride and Piedmont. The references in Operation Crime and the words of the Siderno clan leader in Turin: "They stuck him in a hole, what do they want to find?"

by Pablo Petrasso April 13, 2024 06:15

From left to top, clockwise, Rocco Vincenzo Ursini, his car found after his disappearance and the Turin court

«He already made the hole then… at dinner for a party… there was already the hole ». A barely audible audio track, dim light on a 'Ndrangheta crime that took place on the Calabria-Piedmont axis . In Moncalieri, where the surnames of the mafia families overlap with those of Locride. The magistrates of the DDA of Turin intercept the sentence which could be linked to a case of lupara bianca dating back to 2009: the disappearance of Rocco Vincenzo Ursini.

The context is that of the Echidna investigation which uncovered the cauldron of mafia infiltration in the works of the Turin-Bardonecchia . And much more: embarrassing ties between white-collar workers and bosses, threats to entrepreneurs and vices of a policy that is all too prone to compromise. At the center of the business is the Pasqua family: father (80 year old Giuseppe) and son (Domenico Claudio, 54 years old) : registered office in Brandizzo and links with San Luca. The Pasquas, father and son, talk and the ROS carabinieri record: those conversations "provide important evidence" on the alleged belonging of the two to the 'Ndrangheta "and document direct knowledge of dynamics within the association which concern leading figures of the organization like Mario Ursini and Renato Macrì ".

The former was one of the main protagonists of Piedmontese crime since the end of the 1980s. The repentant Rocco Varacalli "indicated him as the historical leader of the 'Ndrangheta in Turin". Renato Macrì, his nephew, took the first steps of his criminal career alongside the boss and, after a series of convictions "for drug trafficking, usury, extortion and other serious crimes", he was sentenced to one year and 8 months in the Minotaur trial.

Ursini and Macrì are linked by family ties to Rocco Vincenzo Ursini, who disappeared on 9 April 2009 : his body was never found. Let's go back to those words spoken in a low voice by Giuseppe Pasqua: " They did badly with Ursini... he's a good person ." His son replies: «But he already made the hole then... at dinner for a party... the hole was already there... we'll show you where they took it... they had already made the hole». The sentences, the anti-mafia magistrates highlight, " could refer to the event involving the missing Vincenzo Rocco Ursini ". The missing young man was the nephew of the boss Mario Ursini and betrothed to the daughter of Rocco Schirripa , convicted of the murder of Turin's chief prosecutor Bruno Caccia. Only a few scattered traces: an investigative lead that revolved around the nightlife of Moncalieri, his car - an Alfa 166 - found prohibited from parking in Mappano , his sister's appeals to "Who has seen it?".

Ursini is a case of lupara bianca so old that traces of it can also be found in the Crime investigation , one of the milestones in the story of the 'Ndrangheta's invasion of the North . In Siderno we comment on what happened in Piedmont: the bugs placed in the "Ape Green" laundry are a mine of information for investigators. Giuseppe Commisso , the Master, is one of the leaders of Locride. Together with him is Carmelo Bruzzese , head of the Grotteria locale. In the wiretaps received on the eve of August 2009, "the two comment on the murder of Rocco Ursini, attributing it to the members of a gang from Delianuova ", who would have been creditors of a sum of 20 thousand euros towards the victim. «The one who died – say the two intercepted in the laundry – was supposed to give 20 thousand euros to the Macrìs , who are relatives of the Americanello (...) then they argued, they went around and around and finally killed him ». The Master also reports the threats made to the victim's father: "You have to give me all 20 thousand euros, otherwise we will kill your son first and then you will have to die of a broken heart."

Prosecutor Lombardo: "'Ndrangheta, Camorra and Cosa Nostra included in the world economic system"
From Iacchite-April 17, 2024

“Drugs may leave no traces, money certainly leaves them” is the phrase that Giovanni Falcone loved to repeat regarding investigations into drug trafficking, before he was killed on May 23, 1992 together with his wife Francesca Morvillo and the police agents. escort Antonio Montinaro, Rocco Dicillo and Vito Schifani . The Palermo magistrate had already understood then that the shortest way to get to the mafia was to follow the "trail" of the money, checks and financial documents, thus revealing connections and exchanges of interests between the mafia, politics and the economy.
With globalization and a financial universe that has gradually expanded, the mafia's horizon has also become increasingly market-oriented and projected into an increasingly international logic and, also thanks to the crisis, capable of infiltrating every sector.

Just a few years ago, in an information from the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad attached to the documents of the trial against the gangs of Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte resulting from the "Eyphemos" operation, it emerged as men of 'Ndrangheta, Camorra and Cosa Nostra wanted to launder 136 billion euros thanks to the help of a broker , Roberto Recordare , under investigation for mafia association and money laundering.
A person capable, in his own words (as captured in wiretaps), of circulating funds for 500 billion euros.
Money that could represent the tip of an iceberg. Because the question that arises spontaneously is simple: how many brokers are available to the mafias, used to launder dirty money?

We have discussed this point several times with the deputy prosecutor of Reggio Calabria, Giuseppe Lombardo , who today, interviewed by Lavialibera , the magazine of Libera and Gruppo Abele , once again highlighted the strength of the 'Ndrangheta and the other mafias precisely from a financial perspective capable of also exploiting the pandemic emergency.

According to the magistrate, like the other mafias, the 'Ndrangheta is also in a waiting phase, avoiding sensational initiatives. Then, "when the contagion numbers are clearer and the emergency phase tends to wane, then we will try to understand which economic scenarios will emerge in Italy and abroad" .
“The mafia analysts – he further explained – on behalf of the large criminal organizations, will be called upon to identify the most attractive production sectors, into which to inject the enormous dirty capital that the overall mafia system has at its disposal. The leaders will plan, without a shadow of a doubt, the most massive financial doping operation generated by mafia capital that recent history can remember, capable of destabilizing large swathes of the legal economy".
According to the deputy prosecutor of Reggio, at this particular moment, the mafias will operate in order to strengthen their "social role" with initiatives that will go well beyond the granting of "user loans".

The reference is to the work of the high mafia which "will adopt strategies aimed at two main objectives. In the short term it will guarantee forms of survival for categories that have no other financial parachutes (I am thinking of the large sections of the underground, irregular or unsecured economy), obviously not wasting the opportunity to broaden the basis of social consensus among the beneficiaries of aid. The second objective will, however, be medium-long term: the large mafias will aim to consolidate, in a phase of very limited global liquidity, their role as indispensable components of the global economic and financial system".
“The biggest risk – he added, raising an alarm – is represented by the attempt by the large mafias to take advantage of the global crisis and the ever-creeping corrupt practices to carry out the never-abandoned project of creating a banking system parallel to the legal one, aimed at providing liquidity no longer to the entrepreneur, but to the broader financial system that channels resources towards large businesses”.

Finally he concluded: “When the emergency is over, the mafia criminal system will try to stabilize its role in the changed global economic scenario. That will be the moment in which the monitoring activity of all suspicious financial transactions will be strengthened, given that the 'Ndrangheta will no longer aim only to acquire the hidden management of companies, but will seek, more than in the past, to strengthen its presence in the management of essential services, extending from waste disposal and the cement cycle to the credit sector, the healthcare sector, medical supplies or, more generally, basic necessities" .
