Anybody that has watched numerous Danny Greene docs On him and his war with Jack Licavoli in the mid 70s The name Shondor Birns came up. Well Birns kinda was a arbitrator of the policy games in Cleveland and a loan shark. But his feud with Greene was connected with the Gambinos. Greene wanted a loan from Birns to open up a cheat spot after hours. Birns got the money from the Gambino family. Birns gives Greene 70,000. The money got into the hands of a drug dealer. Greene and Birns had a fallout from this leading to the Cleveland being bombing capitol of the US. My question is....why would Birns go to the Gambinos For a 70 K loan? Wouldn't you think he had that or he would have went to John Scalish for the $$$$$$.? Why the Gambinos. Especially when Cleveland was represented by the Genoveses.?

Birns had a good relationship with both Gambino and the Colombo families in New York. Something happened in the 1960s where Birns didnt like to do business with the Genovese crime family unless he had to. The reason he went through the Gambinos for the loan, was he liked doing business with that family and that Greene was too much to have a normal conversation. Birns didnt go Scalish for the loan since John did not like Greene and only tolerated him cause of Frank Brancato, plus Jack Licavoli would not allow a loan to go to Greene. Billy Cox was Birns courier and went to New York to get the money, bring it to Danny Greene, instead he used part of the money to buy cocaine. Greene was in the right to refuse to pay the money back and that it was birns problem. Dont believe this boiled down to them backing different people for the boss position. John Scalish was very much alive when all this went down. Birns tried to collect, but Greene would not pay up. So Birns farmed a contract on greene to low level associates. Greene found out and started going after Birns. When finally they got Birns, they didn't realize that Jack Licavoli and Shondor invested large sums of money together. Thus two weeks after Birns was killed, someone tried to kill Greene with a bomb.

I don't think the Gambinos were going to allow 70,000 To be just forgotten about. I'm sure at some point they collected that 70,000 From Cleveland. It had to.have been before Scalish died in May 1976. I couldn't see them saying "we will come for it after Cleveland gets their house in order " Speaking of Scalish he wasnt really one to take on chances After Appalachian. Tony Panzarella tried to collect a tax from all the bookmaking and etc and Scalish said no. The policy games he left alone. He was rich from Vegas and the Teamsters yet could have Been more wealthy .
