Hey guys. I found this picture randomly while reading about real life gangsters who were portrayed on Boardwalk Empire. I know some of you mentioned that Maranzano was, in fact, a heavy guy and as far as my memory serves me, he was stabbed to death in his office. I don't know if any of you have seen this photo before, but I found it particularly interesting as it could very well be Maranzano.

Yes that's a known photo of him, it's from the crime scene. It's pretty much the closest thing we have to a face/mugshot of Maranzano.

-I shot him a coupla' times.
-What's a couple?
-Hmm, more than a couple... Really I don't know the exact amount, maybe I shot him 10 times, 12 times?
-Maybe fifteen?
-Hmm, it could've been fifteen...

Supposedly, Joe Bonanno always said he didn't have an ounce of fat on him though..he looks fat as fuck.

Oh, is it known? I had no idea, I went by the comments that nobody actually knows how the guy looks. Well, alright then.

I've read several comments here stating that it was written that Maranzano was fatter than Joe the Boss.

He was. Coroner's reports proved it. Maranzano even wore a man girdle.

Bit weird that Bonanno remembers him a lot differently.

That's because Joe Bonanno basically idolized the guy and everyone know's it. In the book, The Mob & The City, the author mentions that quite of what we hear about Joe Masseria & Maranzano isn't entirely based in facts. We've always heard Masseria was fat and a gluttonous pig, but I think the book says he only weighed about 185 at the time of his death, I could be mistaken but it either said at the time of his death or during most of his life that were his weight. We've heard Masseria didn't believe in intermingling races and working with those who weren't Sicilian. But he collaborated with Jewish & Irish gangsters. Maranzano on the other hand, was a pretty hefty guy, had money, and wanted to be sophisticated, but barely spoke good english, and couldn't dress very well.

That photo though, damn. They messed him up. Shot him a couple of times, contrary to the popular myth that no guns were used, and then stabbed him multiple times with stiletto's.

I read "the mob and the city" and found it interesting, the author alex hortis, has been on this site talking about his book. he spent a great deal of time on his research, and he stands by the comments he wrote that you mentioned, masseria at 185, and maranzano a heavy man.

alex hortis is a fine young man and wrote a very good book.

" watch what you say around this guy, he's got a big mouth" sam giancana to an outfit soldier about frank Sinatra. [ from the book "my way"

Well, wait until you get into a debate with him. He have a tendency to call people idiots and Mafia fanboys if they don´t share his views. I remember a thread he started on another mob forum asking people to share their thoughts on his book. Some of the poster´s thoughts were not to his liking and he turned nasty.

I really enjoyed reading "A man of honour" but as everyone says: you have to understand its Joe Bonnanos self flattering version of what went down: A saga with some truth in it. Why isnt Carmine Galante in the book? Why cant Bonnano admit to the fact that the main reason for his visit to Sicily in 1957 was to structure up the heroin distribution with the Sicilian Mob? Why did he claim to have been kidnapped by Maggadino in the 60s?

Some one else on this site launched the theory that he was very much active until Galantes murder in 1979, even though from Arizona due to Gambinos ban on him operating in NY after his plot against the other families was revealed.

I think it sounds fair. Hairy Knuckles: Your view on this?

Bonanno described Maranzano as "robust, full-bodied but with no excess flaccid flesh on him". The gridle he wore made sure he didn´t look fat. I don´t think Bonanno ever saw him naked.

According to Bill Bonanno, narcotics trafficking was brought up during the Palermo meeting. You can read about it in his last book.

If that theory was based on facts, then I´d believe it. but it´s not. It´s probably based on assumptions and somebody´s vivid imagination found on MafiaWiki. If Bonanno was informed about the Galante hit, it must have been as a courtesy and respect of the peace treaty worked out in the wake of the Bananas war. There were talks by some members about letting Bonanno back in to run the Family after Evola´s death, but Bonanno declined.

According to Bill Roemer FBI had wire tapes with Tony Accardo lecturing Giancana of Bonnanos plans of stepping into Arizona and then California. This was in the 1960s. According to Roemer he (Accardo) held the same lecture for Tony Spilotro 20 odd years later.

What is the correct description of Bonnanos status from leaving NYC up till 1983? Retired? Semi-retired?

Fully retired. There was no way the Commission would have allowed Bonanno to run a seperate Family in Arizona (or the Bonanno Family by remote) after the Bananas war.

The new issue of Informer is out today and YES, it has a photo of Maranzano taken when he was alive (and before he gained weight): https://informer-journal.blogspot.com/

Same thing with Billy Batts. There's no mugshots of these guys? No family pics? It blows my mind.

The family probably does have pics. None of them have made there way into the public though.
