Sure sicilian mafia was much more powerful than 'Ndrangheta , and sicilian bosses had huge influence over 'Ndrangheta , but Calabria was their territory, they were never controlled by sicilian mafia. And after Riina war with state and huge pressure from state/police, 'Ndrangheta used money from kidnappings to buy drugs and get into drug business, while everyone were focused on Sicilian mafia , they managed to grow almost silently.

It has always amazed me how many of the dons in Italy are so power driven yet the three mafia orginzations seem to be fairly amicable and do not intrude on one another’s territory as much as you would think.

The 'Ndrangheta was influenced by Cosa Nostra but also Camorra in northern calabria there have been camorra networks.

I have heard that Calabria is like a mix of Sicily(in the south) and Naples(in the north). Not sure at what point on the map that starts.
