I saw ROBIN HOOD over the weekend. Don't waste your time with it. Had heard bad reviews going in to it, and while the first half of the movie actually surprised me at being interesting, the second half was a mess and I lost interest in it.

I recently saw DOGTOOTH and ALPS so I could be caught up on Yorgos Lanthimos work before seeing his new film, THE FAVOURITE. One thing you can never say about his movies is that they are dull or uninteresting. I really enjoyed DOGTOOTH as it was amazing how much the parents were corrupting their children. Basically holding them hostage in their own home and not teaching them properly (like the correct meanings of words). For me, I'd rank his films:

1) THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER
2) THE LOBSTER
3) DOGTOOTH
4) ALPS

I think it's on Amazon Prime?

I saw THE FRONT RUNNER last night. It was a very interesting tale of how tabloid stories now follow around our politicians. It's definitely an interesting look at the dichotomy of time: how things used to be vs. how things are now going to be. Hugh Jackman really gives a strong performance of a man who wants his privacy. It kind of puts the viewer in the predicament of whether or not to feel sorry for him. Yes, he cheated on his wife (multiple times) and is running for President; but at the same time, is he not entitled to his privacy like everyone else?[quote=DuesPaid]I wanna see the marvelous mrs maisel but do not have access.

Just got done watching THE BIG SHORT. Powerful film! Hadn't seen it since it was released in theaters 3 years ago. I think they did an excellent job taking a subject as boring or complicated as the 2008 mortgage crisis and breaking it down so the viewer could understand it better.

I watched both the original CARRIE as well as the 2013 remake. The original is such a classic and this was my first time viewing it in 1080p. The picture, as one would expect, was much improved and probably my most enjoyable time watching it. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie give such wonderful, horrific, and heartbreaking performances. This was my first time seeing the remake and one of the problems I had with it (other than the fact much of the dialogue was verbatim from the original), was I didn't believe the performances of Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. Which I was surprised by Moore as I actually enjoy her work and thought she would have been wonderful as Carrie's mother. However, most if not all performances in this film, just seemed to lack empathy.

Same as THE BIG SHORT, I hadn't seen SPOTLIGHT since the theaters in 2015 and while it's another powerful film, I don't think it has the same staying power and looking back, I'm a little surprised it won Best Picture. 3 years later, who's still talking about SPOTLIGHT?

I also watched both SINISTER and SINISTER 2. I saw the original years ago and it did nothing for me but had never seen the sequel. After rewatching the original and seeing the sequel for the first time, they both still don't do anything for me. Lackluster films that overstay their welcome with a villain that's hardly seen. I can understand why they stopped at 2 films (probably should have stopped after the first)

I will vouch as they're both very good! Although between the two, I prefer THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.

Finally got my MoviePass working (yeah, it's still in business) and was able to see THE FAVOURITE last night. I really did enjoy it. Thought Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman gave brilliant performances and it was refreshing to see Stone in a villianess role for a change. In terms of director Yorgos Lanthimos' work, this is up there with THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER as my personal favorite but still having difficulty deciding between the two. I look forward to a second viewing and I do recommend it!

Saw a few movies this week: THE MULE, VOX LUX, AQAUMAN and MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS. THE MULE was good. Clint Eastwood's typical self. This film was inspired by a true story and the ending was pretty heartfelt. VOX LUX is a somewhat powerful film in it's own right and I would like to have a second viewing of it soon. AQUAMAN, while the visual effects were beautiful, the story was boring and coming in at about 2 hours and 20 minutes, I was ready for it to be over sooner rather than later. Finally, MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS was an interesting political movie starring two strong female leads in Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan. There wasn't as much of Robbie as I was hoping for and the betrayal by the many of Saoirse' "allies" was bitter to witness over and over again.

I don't really watch any new movies anymore. No good actors anymore. They are all just interchangeable faces.

That's why I'm excited for The Mule. It's sad that it takes a 90 year old actor to knock it out of the ballpark and make you want to see a movie.

Got around to watching Halloween (2018). I thought it was pretty mediocre. The scene showing the aftermath of the escape had the potential to be a lot better but it fell flat, like much of the movie. The scene in the toilet was a rehash of a much more effective scene in what I believe was Halloween H20. I don't know what the point was of the two British actors who were in the start of the movie and killed off early on; I'm not entirely sure they were necessary. I also think the twist with the new Loomis at the end was treated pretty ham-fistedly.

Just overall I think it was a pretty poorly written and poorly acted movie.

One more thing. Michael Myers is written in this movie as a single-minded monster who does nothing but move and kill. His raison d'être is to kill Laurie Strode. This is impressed upon the viewer. Yet in several scenes after killing somebody he will stage their corpse in an elaborate and complex manner. For example: he turns a decapitated human head into a jack-o-lantern; and he puts a ghost costume over another corpse. It just doesn't seem consistent and true to the character.

No prizes for guessing that the worst performance in the movie is that of Miles Robbins, the son of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon, showing that nepotism is still truly alive and well in Hollywood.

I remarked to myself that the actresses that portray Jamie Lee Curtis's daughter and granddaughter looked more like sisters than mother and daughter. I go to their Wikipedia pages and one is 43 and one is 23. However different sources give different ages for the granddaughter. She could be as old as 30 according to one source listed. Either way she's in the running for one of the oldest looking people to portray a teenager in a movie I've seen.

Watched Mary Poppins Returns. This is a good movie to take the extended family out to see.

ESCAPE ROOM was better than I was anticipating. I felt it had a lackluster of an ending but prior to that, it was a pretty fun, and at times, pulse raising ride. Not overly grotesque as it's PG-13 and while I can't endorse everyone to see it at the theater, I would recommend catching it when it's available on a streaming service/HBO.
