I am amazed at Marciano's accomplishments at a weight and height that was exceptional for a heavyweight fighter. While Floyd Patterson weighed the same, he was 6 ft. Obviously Marciano's two strengths were his punch and his ability to take a punch.

All discussion of a younger challenger is horse crap. Younger just means inexperienced, and he hasn't accomplished anything and never will..

Not many know this, but Rockys Edge was his training.
He ran. Every day. 5 Miles of Hills. Lifted rocks, push ups etc.
But most importantly, he punched a 300# bag. No one, even today, punches or owns a 300# bag. It would be hell on your wrists, shoulders and joints. Most today are 50, 80, 100.
He hit 300#, and moved it. And turned himself into a beast.

Rocky Marciano had the height and body type of an average UFC welterweight. To me, that makes his accomplishments as a HW champion in the golden era of boxing that more impressive. In one word: LEGEND..

Joe Louis is the far superior boxer. Prime for prime, Rocky wouldn't stand a chance.

Always fun to debate who would win between two elite fighters at or near their prime, especially among the heavyweights. One thing is for sure - only with Rocky did someone win every single fight, every night out, while taking on the best around. From Joe Louis to Lennox Lewis, Ali to Jack Johnson, only the Rock kept that 0 on his record. For that, he can never be discounted in any hypothetical fight. He never excused a bad night, a bad cut (of which he had several), or a bad decision. When he was losing, he always - always - found a way to win, usually in the most dramatic way possible.

Rocky Marciano was a great champion who fought a lot of tomato cans in a weak era. He was a fantastic slugger who could apply the pressure and break his opponents down by coming forward with power punches, but the idea that he is the greatest heavyweight in history? Come on. That opinion is either the result of bias or ignorance. I would rate Ali, Tyson, Lewis, Louis, Holmes and Holyfield above Marciano. All of their resumes are more impressive and they have better boxing skills overall. Marciano to me is more on the level of a Moorer, Norton or Klitschko.

I would say you should put George Forman with that group after all that longevity. He grilled a lot of fighters.

Norton’s style was the guy that did the most damage to Ali when they fought.

Have you ever seen Ali in the movie Requiem for a Heavy weight. Made in 1962 starred
Anthony Quinn, Jackie Gleason, mickey Rooney and a very young Casios Clay / Mohammed Ali.

It is worth seeing just to see Ali when he was young.

Tyson does not belong in the conversation of those ranked above Rocky. Ali, Lewis, Louis, and Foreman are reasonable. Holmes wasn't that heralded but is an all-timer and a bad matchup for Rock. Rocky-Holyfield would have been an all-time classic fight.

Tyson though either walked through his opponent or lost. He never rose to a challenge - whenever he was met with adversity, he lost. And Marciano would not just fold like Michael Spinks.
