I want to start train in martial arts
My two candidate are karate and kung fu.
But i'll be glad to hear what you guys have to suggests.
Most of you are from the us which the mma is really popular but i think i want to go for something more traditional.
So guys what do you have to recommend ??

I practised judo, taekwondo and muay thai.

If you want to do karate I recommend Kyokushin.

I have shotokan next to my house
What do you think ?

Yeah learning those high kicks is great, but nowadays I'm a bit stiff lol. You could first join a Shotokan school and maybe later make the switch to Kyokushin If you want to try the harder stuff.

Like breaking a few baseball bats.

Personally, i think a straight up boxing gym is the best way to go by far. At least with karate, you wont get hurt though.

Krav Maga has grown enormously in popularity in the Netherlands in recent years. Krav Maga is not a sport and therefore has no rules. It is a method that is based on reality. This is one reason why Krav Maga is rapidly gaining popularity . Because it is explicitly meant for everyone. Even if you have not done a sport for a while and are in your 40s you can pick it up quickly.

Speaking about muay thai
I knew a guy who traind for 25+ years in muay boran
He was a beast
He teach me a lot of stuff he also told me to try krav maga

It all depends on your goals...some people train for fitness, others self defense, confidence etc etc. it also depends on how much time you want/can devote to the training. I taught Krav Maga classes for a number of years, trained in Israel, Poland and the UK and for me, its main advantage is that (given quality instruction) it's easy to become reasonably proficient in months, rather than years as it relies on mainly natural reactions against threats/attacks. It's also about developing awareness of potential situations and building confidence.

The disadvantage is that it lends/takes from Muay Thai, mma, boxing etc and sometimes leaves students with a false sense of just how good they actually are. Some defenses against a well trained martial artist wouldn't work out well unless your Krav Maga was almost world class. That being said, the counter arguement is that your unlikely to run into a seasoned martial artist who is looking for a fight. Krav is certainly the most appropriate for anyone looking for an excellent standard of self defense against any Joe Public, no matter what size they are

I think BJJ is the most fun with the Gii. I love watching my son choke out his opponent using his Gii or the opponents. It’s a lot of fun to watch he hardly ever wins matches on points anymore.

As I said, Krav Maga is no doubt the all round best defense system you'll get against any Joe Public...no rules, no bullshit, no bowing to the "master" etc which i feel is all a bit embarrassing. Be careful with ground based martial arts for self defense..thats the last place you want to be with multiple attackers...that's a big bonus with Krav, you deal reasonably well with 3,4 multiple attackers as well (yes, it is very possible). We also trained in cars, on buses, in water, uneven surfaces, close quarter areas, defending against sucker punches, all types of grabs/holds/chokes, using common objects as weapons, using/defending against knives, guns..When you become more advanced, there are different styles as well, military, law enforcement which promote more "practical" solutions for there particular scenarios..(lethal for military, controlling and subduing for law enforcement)

Can't think of any other system that does all this....but again, it depends what you're after...a sport with rules and competitions or purely self defense...

I trained all over Israel...mainly based out of Netanya on the coast though

As a dutchman I would say try Dutch style kickboxing!

I think Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the best. Kung Fu an Krav Maga have their fans, yet as far as I know there has never been a Kung Fu or Krav Maga winner of any MMA events. If a student of one of them were to enter and event and win, or at least compete well, it would raise the status of each.

I could show you and old movie Jimmy Cagney made called Blood on the Sun. He played a newspaper man in Japan before the start of WW2. He studied Jujitsu there.

In the movie he fights a Japanese secret police men who was proficient in the art. Not all the fight was good. But in the fight Cagney had the guy from behind and was trying to choke him out with the clothes the hapanes guy was wearing. The fight scene alone was worth seeing the movie.

Sylvia Sidney was his love interest. I met her one night in front of the Mayflower hotel she was talking with a guy I knew who knew who she was. Every see beetle juice she was the older women who was dead innthat movie.

My son got his black in the Renzo Gracie school here in NYC.

When I was a young kid I saw this guy walking on the side walk in Italian Harlem with his arm sticking out. So you could not pass him without walking in the street. Some guy was walking the other way and could not pass him in the sidewalk. So the guy told him to put his arm down. So they started to fight. The guy with the arm out knew judo. So he kept throwing the guy to the ground. I felt the guy would have kept fighting him, but saw he could not do anything against the judo player. So he got mad and just shot him in the chest killed him and walked a way.

I thought Bas Rutten was a fucking animal when he did mma.

Bas Rutten was an animal. He fought at his normal weight too, he did no weight cutting. His Pancrase fights are great to watch too, he added his commentary explaining what he was thinking and doing in the ring.

Longer then it took me to get my new Randle 14 attack knife from the Randle company in Florida I waited 5 yrs for mine. I think it took him 6 years.

But he got a lot better since then. Trained 2 Times a day every day. He did not know like to rest. He teaches and works construction so he does something 7 days a week.

He taught at Renzos school, then to Shalin Roberio’s school. Aldo when he is here trains at Shalins school. My son has rolled with him. He could kick my sons ass doing mma but not doing BJJ.

He also taught at Marcelo Garcia’s school. He has never beat him not many have.

Speaking of Rutten dutch fox sports did a big interview with him recently where he also talks about his youth while growing up in Brabant. Looking forward to that.

Muay Thai or Boxing And Wrestling or MMA/BJJ covers all bases.

You dont need years, 6 mo in stand up and 6 mo on ground training covers all bases.

Aidan, I agree, but it's not easy finding time to cross train if that's what you mean. Krav Maga has suffered from the hype and that's exactly the reason I stopped teaching...its all about the money now, I was getting pushed more and more to sell uniforms, then merchandise (mugs, key rings etc) at gradings etc..I loved the teaching aspect and training, but I just couldn't sell tat to students who I respected at hugely upscaled prices on the back Krav Maga. Krav Maga is a way of life, if you spend the time to look into it, but the vast majority of people who run clubs, and I know a lot of them (mainly Krav practitioners as well) are only in it to make a buck and simply don't get it...But I totally get what you say about it being overhyped, but it's for the reasons I've said. I hate saying that about Krav Maga, but it's true. Advice if you want to train? Research and remember my advice at your first grading...!

Vladimir Putin is a 8th-Dan Black Belt in Kyokushin and holds a 6th Dan in Judo. Despite not actually practicing taekwondo himself, he has achieved the elusive ninth Dan in 2013 higher than Chuck Norris lol.

I probably check out the Systema school in my town, not really familiar with it. They say systema is also suitable as an addition to other martial arts such as karate, kickboxing and MMA.

Play soccer I have an old post somewhere to in prove your volleys.

I had kids who could hit a head high volley and score with the other foot still touching the ground. Can any of your kick boxers do that?

Also you can be the best BJJ player and you won’t be able to do anything with a guy with a gun who is a good shot and standing away from you out of reach.

My youngest son tried MMA all martial artist try it. He has a blind spot on one side. Does not effect his BJJ but he would get hit in a MMA match or against a real boxer.
