Article from the Los Angeles Times Mexican drug lord and prison escape artist Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has been extradited to the United States to stand trial in Brooklyn on drug trafficking and murder conspiracy charges, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement.
“He is in the air,” a U.S. official said, confirming an account by the Mexican government that it was sending Guzman to face federal prosecution in the United States.
Brooklyn has long been seen as the likely destination for Guzman, and federal prosecutors there last year revised an indictment to drop charges that would make the accused drug lord eligible for the death penalty, which had been a sticking point in negotiations between the U.S. and Mexico.
He is charged in six separate indictments throughout the United States, according to the Justice Department statement.
The extradition comes on President Obama’s last full day in office, before Donald Trump is sworn in Friday.
Guzman, who heads the Sinaloa drug cartel, has sometimes been called the world's wealthiest and most powerful drug trafficker.
In January 2001, he left a high-security Mexican prison, reportedly with help from bribed prison staff.
He ran his expanding drug business as a fugitive for the next 13 years before being captured again in February 2014.
Then in July 2015, he managed to escape from the Altiplano prison outside the capital. Authorities had labeled the prison escape-proof. He used a mile-long tunnel connected to the shower stall in his cell.
He was recaptured last January in the Pacific coastal city of Los Mochis and returned to Altiplano.
In May, he was transferred to another maximum-security prison, Federal Social Readaptation Center No. 9, in the border city of Juarez.

I ask everyone, If YOU were president, how would you handle the cartel and El Chapo situation?
I TOTALLY understand that eliminating El Chapo was/is meaningless. There are 1000's of guys willing to step up and pick up the slack.
I SERIOUSLY believe that in order for these guys to be getting the amount of drugs across the borders, there HAS TO BE government officials that are on the take. I don't see any other way to be transporting truck loads of stuff. That tunnel theory is a joke to me. Yes, I believe they exist but not to be transporting the amount of stuff that gets here. Why didn't the El Chapo escape video show us the entire tunnel on video? He was already out, what the fu*k does it matter? I believe because there NEVER was a complete tunnel. Yes there was the illusion of a tunnel. They dug the first 50-100 feet on the outside and THEY (gov officials) broke through the shower side.
I seriously believe that El Chapo refused to pay more money to the right people and that is why HE became the ultimate target. Why aren't they concerned about the other cartel leaders like El Chapo?
Why doesn't the president clean house at the border with people he can trust?
I am sorry, I just DO NOT believe 90% of what the news feeds us and what our government tells us....It is so sad!...We all learn right from wrong in K-12 and then enter the real world and see the adults doing all wrong.
I said my peace!

I said my peace! ItalianIrishMix there are trusted men in every agent that fight drug lords in every countries in the world but they can't search in every truck, every car, every cargo in every private boat, airplane ecc because in the US but also in Europe there are milions of place to search and if you aren't the North Korea you can't stop everything to find where the drug is;second if in Colombia 1 kilo of coke cost 1000$ and was sold in US at 60000$ a kilo you'll find people that will find a mean to smuggling coke Im USA. Third in Colombia the narcos pay more the peasants to plant the coke plant same things in Afghanistan. The US it the big drugs user in the world, you can control and fight the war on drugs not win it.

Wow really. He made trump mad. Should have left him alone there will never be a wall anyway. Let sleeping dogs lay. Watch El Chapo agree to fund the complete wall, for a 15 years sentence.

The US government should offer Chapo a peal deal to only give up corrupt government officials and border patrol agents (on both sides). Or they could at least offer up a facility slightly less horrible than Florence in exchange for ratting on corrupt politicians in Mexico,
It would never happen because his sons and likely extended family are still involved.

El Chapo jury hears secretly taped cocaine deal By Emily Saul December 13, 2018 | 4:50pm A Brooklyn courtroom Thursday heard notorious Mexican kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo†Guzman in action, listening in on a phone call where he can be heard coordinating a cocaine deal with a member of a Colombian guerrilla group. “Tomorrow I will send a technician over there to see it,†Chapo insists on the call, which was secretly taped in May 2010. The drug lord repeatedly insists the cocaine must be inspected before he sends a $50,000 advance for the six ton deal, with government witness Jorge Milton Cifuentes, who trafficked cocaine for Chapo, explaining they’d received inferior drugs from the guerrillas before. Jurors listened intently to the damning exchange, in which the unidentified member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army, or FARC, tries to sell the cocaine to Chapo for $2,100 per kilo of cocaine. Chapo skillfully whittles him down to $2,000 per kilo for the first two tons, and then gets him to agree to send the other four tons on credit. While it wasn’t clear who had recorded the call, Cifuentes testified earlier that Chapo had been having trouble with his “cryptography†system — which was meant to block eavesdropping — because the cartel IT guy forgot to file some paperwork. The deal never went through, Cifuentes testified, though he didn’t know why. Chapo faces life behind bars if convicted of various drug trafficking and conspiracy charges. https://nypost.com/2018/12/13/el-chapo-jury-hears-secretly-taped-cocaine-deal/

The Dutch police have, largely unconsciously, contributed to the arrest of one of the largest drug lords in the world: the Mexican Joquin Guzman, better known as 'El Chapo'. In 2011 and 2012, the Dutch police listened to large parts of the drug network around El Chapo, reporting sources to de Volkskrant .
Research from the newspaper shows that a server used in the eavesdropping operation was located in the Netherlands. The bugged communication was passed on to the FBI.
The Dutch police only partially knew the importance of the operation, writes the newspaper. The FBI only told in January 2013 that the bugging operation revolved around El Chapo.
The network around El Chapo could be tapped because an infiltrator working for the FBI had set up the communication network for the drug lord. The FBI therefore had access to the server and the keys to decipher the messages.
Reportedly the server ended up in the Netherlands because of the close cooperation. The Netherlands also deals easily with tap requests compared to other countries.
From the moment the server was used in the Netherlands, the communication around El Chapo was tapped by the Team High Tech Crime (THTC). The encrypted data was passed on to the FBI.
In the Netherlands, few people would have been aware of the data collection. Even within the police, only a small group would have known about the cooperation with the FBI.

What do you think? He'll get life without parole? He should have made a deal like Cali cartel brothers Gilberto and Miguel. They were sentenced to 30 years in prison, after pleading guilty to charges of conspiring to import cocaine. They took this deal in exchange for the US agreeing not to bring charges against their family members.

They leaked all this stuff to press 2 days before the jury gets the case and is home on the weekend. They get the judge to block the defense from asking the 2 cooperating witnesses who drug the girls and found them any question of involvement . Shady all around. I mean chapo guilty as hell but did they need to sandbag him to win..... hmmmm The government truly doesn’t play fair. The fucker can rot for all I care but the US Attorneys office is full of crooked cocksuckers.

THE DIRTY SECRET OF EL CHAPO’S DOWNFALL As the Mexican cartel leader’s trial draws to an end, one thing is clear: drug kingpins reign as long as they make their partners money. When they stop, they end up in jail. BY DON WINSLOW https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/02/the-dirty-secret-of-el-chapo-downfall
