I think castellano did do some time when he was younger. Besides, I rather do 3 or 4 years in the can instead of ending up like castellano.

Castellano also did 5-6 months in 1934 at age 19. He and two friends held up a clothing store in Connecticut and got away with $51. A passer-by happened to see Castellano pulling a gun out of his glove box and reported the license plate to authorities. He was promptly picked up and arrested once he returned to New York.

Never knew about it until I started reading "Boss of Bosses" recently. It's a book about Castellano that was written by FBI agents Joe O'Brien and Andy Kurins, who were part of the FBI's Gambino Squad in the 1980's.

I've read it more than once, which is rare for me because most mob bios are poorly written. There's a lot of bullshit about how they actually wired the house up. But the book itself was VERY well written.

Their ghostwriter on that project was Laurence Shames. He's a wonderful novelist. After he finished "Boss of Bosses," he used that research to write a series of comic crime novels set in Key West, Florida. If you enjoy comic crime fiction (like Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen, et al.), you'll enjoy Shames.

Do they have to be made? I know some people American and Chinese in the heroin business who never did any major jail time and lived to be old farts.

I always wondered exactly about that story, PB. I've seen other mob shows/documentaries, where other agents/LE give differing opinions from the book of how Castellano's house was really bugged. I think I've read or heard about 3-4 different stories of exactly how it went down and who was involved. In the book I think O'Brien and Kurins say that they were actually the ones who bugged it and have some outrageous story, but after seeing others take claim for it in different documentaries, I wonder who is bullshitting and who is telling the truth?

Either way, Big Paul really hung himself after that. Kind of ironic after he made such a stink about Ruggiero's house being bugged.

Not ironic so much as hypocritical. And hypocrisy rules in that world wink.

John S------- got away with a fortune. In fact, the headline of my story about him echoes the name of this thread... "Crime Really Does Pay--for Some."

A Colombo capo (retired?) he owns car distributorships and sells Mega Yachts named after James Bond movies. The NYPD was so pissed at him, I actually got a call from a detective expressly feeding me info to write a story.

I'd say Tommy Gambino has probably lived the most charmed life..He never had to worry about getting whacked etc...I think the G said he was worth around $200 mill...not bad for a guy who did what 2 years in jail, if that ??

Tony Federici has apparently ridden off into the sunset and hasn't served a day.

Kid blast Gallo and punchy Illanaro served little time and had/have looooong careers.

MORGAN: Why didn't you fight him at the park if you wanted to? I'm not goin' now, I'm eatin' my snack.
CHUCKIE: Morgan, Let's go.
MORGAN: I'm serious Chuckie, I ain't goin'.
WILL: So don't go.

And he very rarely had to live up to his nickname, either. Not that he couldn't. Far from it. But that's one guy who is more content to be a nice guy than a tough guy. A gentleman. And you know it's rare that I'll post such a thing about most of these assholes wink.

There's something to be said about not killing everyone in sight out of jealousy and paranoia wink.

And as you can see, I agree with you, Furio. But Stevie also did a couple of short stretches. But again, I agree with the spirit of your post smile.

Crime is the most expensive sport in the world. Lawyers, prison, cost to family and loved ones.
Its so expensive, it costs you your health even when you dont get caught. All the worrying and stress about the dna you might have left at a crime scene, the camera's that may have caught a pic of you, the witness that may identify you, and the friend that may turn on you.
No, it doesnt pay.

Depends on the type of crime, the case of street crime is definitely as you say even though many of these criminals are sociopaths.
In the case of white-collar crimes, I think that the crime pay,and pay well.

In the past I'd agree with you, Furio. But the American government has REALLY been cracking down on stock fraudsters and financial crimes. 25 years ago, guys like Michael Milken got a slap on the wrist. Today, guys like Bernie Madoff are getting life.

A close friend was locked up in federal prison. The guys with some of the stiffest sentences were white collar. They are really coming down hard on that due to all the internet and bank fraud. Stick to loan sharking..lol
