The Shining is a 1980 British-American psychological horror film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, co-written with novelist Diane Johnson, and starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scatman Crothers. The film is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name, though there are significant changes.[4]

In the film, Jack Torrance, a writer and recovering alcoholic, takes a job as an off-season caretaker at an isolated hotel called the Overlook Hotel. His young son possesses psychic abilities and is able to see things from the past and future, such as the ghosts who inhabit the hotel. Soon after settling in, the family is trapped in the hotel by a snowstorm, and Jack gradually becomes influenced by a supernatural presence; he descends into madness and attempts to murder his wife and son.

Fav film from Kubrick smile

One of my fav films, epic performance by Jack Nicholson. They don't make films like this anymore..

It Is Driven By Greed And Controlled By Fear.

The 1997 mini-series was truer to the novel. And to be totally honest, I thought it was superior in every way, save for Nicholson's iconic performance.

Really this is one film that should never be remade or a bullshit reboot to say the least,

It's a classic

Not a great film, the novel was better. But, as people here said, an iconic performance by Nicholson.

I felt the complete opposite. Read the novel years ago (need to revisit it) and have found a new love for the film the past couple of years. As of now, I feel the movie is much better, but again, I need to revisit the novel. Going to see DOCTOR SLEEP (the sequel to THE SHINING) when it opens in a few weeks. Haven't read the book yet but so far the reviews have praised it as a worthy sequel.

I see Dr. Sleep on my cable lineup and skip it, I did not know it was a prequel to The Shining, now I have to see it.

The book and the movie were good, I think the movie is better, Kubrick really pulled it off.
